📌Save this list to plan your “stranger” Virginia adventure! Which one of these are you headed to first?? 📍Compton Peak trail- Shenandoah NP Basalt columns formed from lava flows millions of years ago 📍Dragons Tooth- Catawba, VA Rock monolith made of Tuscarora quartzite that looks like a giant tooth 📍Natural Tunnel State Park- Duffield, VA A huge naturally formed cave now used as a railroad tunnel 📍Shenandoah Caverns- Quicksburg, VA Active caverns with features like the Bacon Room, Diamond Cascade and Rainbow Lake 📍Natural Bridge State Park- Natural Bridge, VA 215-foot tall Limestone Gorge that was naturally carved out by a creek 📍Stony Man Mountain- Shenandoah NP I enjoy the rocky spine, but you can supposedly also see a man’s face in the rocks (Little Stony Man) 📍The Natural Chimneys 120-ft tall natural limestone formations resembling a medieval castle. 📍Buzzard Rock Massive rock slabs resembling knife blades where hawks, falcons, and even bald eagles fly 📍Old Rag Mountain The most popular (and difficult) hike in Shenandoah National Park- named after the Old Rag Granite formed over a billion years ago 👉🏼Have you been to any of these? What else would you add? Let me know in the comments! ⚠️If you visit any of these places, please do your part to help protect and preserve them. Stay on trails, park only in designated areas, dispose of waste properly, and respect wildlife.

Saved the best for last! 😏 With its lush greenery and beautiful waterfalls, Shenandoah is a great summer travel destination. We’ve compiled our favorite summer hikes along with our best tips to help you plan the perfect summer trip to SNP! [📌SAVE this post & SHARE w/ your travel pals.] BEST HIKES: 1. Mary’s Rock 2. Blackrock Summit 3. Dark Hollow Falls 4. Hazel Falls and Caves 5. Stony Man Mountain 6. Doyle’s River Falls + Jones Run Falls 7. South River Falls 8. Hightop Peak 9. Cedar Run Falls 10. White Oak Canyon Trail 11. Compton Peak 12. Hawksbill Mountain 13. Rose River Falls Trail 14. Old Rag Mountain Bonus: Bearfence is a quick hike with a rock scramble and 360 views! TIPS FOR VISITING: 1. Use your America the Beautiful Pass or buy an entrance pass online beforehand. 2. The northern entrances (Front Royal and Thornton Gap) will be the busiest, so try Swift Run or Rockfish instead. 3. The campgrounds will likely be full on weekends, but first come first serve sites may be available. 4. Look for less trafficked trails to avoid crowds. Try starting early in the morning or later in the afternoon. 5. Check Alltrails for routes that fit your time schedule. 6. You probably won’t have service in the park, so offline maps are your friend! 7. There is one gas station at Big Meadows that should be re-opening soon. 8. Skyland Lodge has the BEST blackberry pie! 9. Remember to follow all principle of Leave No Trace. Help leave the park better than you found it! *For summer events and other unique opportunities in the park, follow @snptrust. 👉🏼Will you visit Shenandoah this summer!?

My favorite place to watch the sunset in Shenandoah.🥰 👉🏼Tag someone you’re bringing here in 2023! 📍Stony Man Mountain Shenandoah National Park HIKE INFO: 👇🏼 At 4,011 feet, Stony Man Mountain is the second highest peak in Shenandoah National Park. It offers some of the most incredible views of the Shenandoah Valley! Located 10 miles south of the Thornton Gap entrance station, this beautiful summit is just 2 hours drive from DC. Aside from the stunning views, there are a few other reasons I think this is the best sunset hike in Shenandoah. [📌 Save for your future visit!] 👉🏼Plenty of space at the summit to accommodate spectators, though if you go in the winter you probably won’t see anyone! 👉🏼Multiple route options put you less than a mile away from your car once the sun sinks down so you aren’t trekking in the dark. 👉🏼The summit trail is just 1.5 miles out and back. If you have time for a longer hike, take the 3.5 mile loop with Little Stony Man via the Passamaquoddy trail. 👉🏼The parking area is right by Skyland Resort, so you can pop over for a drink and some blackberry pie after! ⚠️Please do your part to help keep Shenandoah beautiful! Also check road and trail conditions if you’re heading out this winter. Skyline Drive has been closed for ice and downed trees. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on this trail.

We visited early New Year's Eve. At first we weren't sure if we should make the trip since it was foggy where we were, but I'm glad we did! The mountains are high enough that we were above the fog and it made for some great views! There were several overlooks along the way with some great views. Make sure you stop by at least one or two. All of them have a sign shortly before the pull off so you have advanced warning.

There is a decent sized parking lot and only two other cars when we got there. We actually didn't see anyone on the trail. The hike was pretty short - probably only 20 min to the top. A little bit of a climb, but nothing too bad. The trail was a little rockier than I expected, but not too bad. It was a little slick because of the previous day's rain and all of the leaves. The one nice thing about hiking I'm the winter is that there are no leaves to obstruct your view while you hike. So you can peek through the trees as you go up to get sort of sneak previews of what you will see at the top.

On the way back, we took the Passamaquody trail to Little Stony Man, which also had nice views. You could even see the look out point for Stony Man from there. I'm sure the views are even more spectacular when the leaves are green or changing colors in the fall, but it was still an enjoyable hike! I would definitely recommend especially for those who don't want to hike far or hard for a nice view. One thing to note, the top will be a little chillier with the wind so keep that in mind when trying to determine what to wear. It was mild on the hike up and back (especially since we were moving, but at the top it was windy so a bit chillier. We will definitely...

Must do hike in Shenandoah NP no matter what season you are there. It's a relatively easy hike with clear trail markers. The Summit provides stunning panoramic view of the valley. Nothing can be as refreshing as standing on top of the summit with arms wide open, wind on your face and soaking up all the views that this place has to offer. We were there around Sunset and it was partially cloudy, but it was still beautiful. I believe, on a clear day sunset scene would be...

Awesome views. The hike was worth it. Parking available below the summit and hike trail is next to it. No paved path to the peak, so Wheel chair or stroller can't be taken to the top. No restrooms or shops nearby. Picnic and camping locations nearby. Have to pay to enter the state park and reach the summit. Be sure to carry some water and you...
