I had the most racist experience of my life at my local JCC. I got hired to work in the Preschool section and the co or lead teacher I was assigned to work with was nothing but nasty and rude. I even pointed this out “management” we were given tips to work better together bc I was straight up told “some people just don’t mesh”. The behavior continued and even worsened. She blocked every attempt at me doing my job. Every way I tried to help, she put me down just to run to management and tell them I wasn’t doing my job. It was a horrible and hostile work environment. At this point, I tried to resign only to be cheered on to give it another try by upper management. We were then given the same steps to work better together “because some people just don’t mesh”. At this point I voiced my feelings on racist and discrimination. I was told “we don’t do that here” and the woman couldn’t possibly be racist bc “we knew her all her life” it was horrible. At this point I no longer felt welcome or motivated to work and just quit after this same teacher made straight up offensive comments in front of other teachers. Who readily noticed how I was treated. I now have a much better work environment and great management. But I wanted to share my take on the local JCC and advise anyone looking for diversity to avoid this place by any...
Read moreI have been a member of the JCC off-and-on for years, and I will continue to be a member for a long time. The staff are all friendly, the facilities are always clean, and there are a great group of people that are members. From the gym to the pool, basketball courts, fitness classes, and social events, the JCC offers a ton of benefit for your membership dollars.
My main use of the JCC is the gym, where you will find a ton of cardio equipment, a bunch of weight machines, and a good amount of free weights. At peak times you may have to wait for a weight machine or bench, but it is not usually an issue. Saturday mornings during the summer seem to be the worst time for this, but the rest of the time throughout the year you are good to go.
The only knock I would give the gym is that when a piece of equipment breaks, it does take too long to fix. I don't know who they contract with to fix the equipment, but they are not timely in my opinion. Recently the backrest on the leg extension machine had a bolt that broke. This could have been removed with pliers, taken to Colmar to find a replacement, and fixed within the hour. It is about four weeks later, and it is still waiting for someone to replace a single bolt. That gets to be very frustrating.
All-in-all, the JCC is a great place, and you will be happy to...
Read moreWhen I joined the Margate Jewish Community Center (JCC), my main focus was on aquatics where I could enjoy an early morning swim. I soon learned that the JCC was so much more than a place to enjoy an array of programs, with state-of-the-art gym equipment, and specialized programs for people of all ages. In addition to these benefits, the JCC also offers a sense of community and belonging that is akin to a supportive vibrant family. Displayed outside is a sign that carries a profound message: “This Is Where You Belong” It’s simple, but it captures what I feel and the essence of the JCC’s mission based on Jewish tradition and values, to offer a sense of belonging, inclusivity, welcoming all in the community to participate in these wonderful programs. The JCC is a special place where people connect, share ideas, and make great lasting friendships. From serving children and young adults with educational and sports programs to senior wellness classes, the JCC has a remarkable staff of expert trainers and instructors offering the finest techniques in healthy physical activity. Whether it is aerobics, yoga, cycling, basketball, or aquatics and many great social programs and events, the JCC offers us the best experience and it is...
