If you undertake the Haight-Ashbury Flower Power Walking Tour, chances are that your guide will be either Stan F. or Pam B.
I can make no comment regarding Stan’s tour, other than the many, many positive reviews on a variety of sites would indicate that Stan is an excellent guide and story teller.
When I participated in mid August, 2024, Pam was the guide and story teller. And she provided a most wonderful 2.5 hours, as we walked 10 or so blocks of the “tie-dyed cradle of hippy culture”, (description stolen from the tour pamphlet -😍). You will hear all about the neighbourhood’s history, Victorian architecture, protest rallies, and of course the Summer of Love. Much more also.
Pam, herself a genuine "Flower Child and Hippie" of the late '60's, lived through the era, and has lived in the area for around 50 years. She is a self-confessed Socialist and remains a passionate advocate of the hippie ethos ... embracing peace, love, and harmony ... and of expressing oneself through art, music, and fashion. Rejection of war, injustice and hate. ☮️🩷
(And if along the way you "drop a little acid" or "smoke a little pot" then so be it.🌀🌼🌀 …. 😂😊)
Pam is a lovely lady, and over the 2.5 hour tour she shared many of her experiences with me. A very personal account of the period.
One final hint, at the conclusion of the walk, offer to buy Pam a drink, as an extra “thank you”, at one of the many bars in the area – (better still, let Pam pick the bar). She might, … just might, … accept and if she does, you’ll be rewarded with a further...
Read moreStan was amazing. He has been in the neighborhood since the 1980s and is a history scholar, so has lots of knowledge about the Haight ever since the neighborhood came to be as SF grew. I loved hearing all about the influential people who lived in the area especially in the latter half of the 60s. We got our shot in front of the Dead house and made a really cool stop in what could and should be turned into a museum of hippie memorabilia. Coolest archives of prints of the Oracle + concert posters + photographs on the walls. I wish I'd been alive to see it firsthand, but this tour is a really good consolation. :-) On our day, we went long - 3 hours in total. Be sure you allot the time to enjoy the tour and then shop or eat on...

I had no idea the history of the Summer of Love (and the events leading up to it, and following it) were so rich!
Lots of looks at history, architecture, people who lived there, all while strolling along beautiful Victorian houses and looking at photos and documents that Pam (amazing guide!!) carries.
The tour finishes with a look inside a Victorian home and its hippie museum (+ welcome access to a toilet). An awesome time that I now always recommend to my friends...
