It's a shame, but it's just not the same John Herrs anymore. I applaud them for fighting for John Herrs and buying the store from the Herrs family to keep it open for Millersville and the surrounding community. It's such a rapidly changing consumer market that went through the pandemic, inflation, and competition from so many competitors. It's a brutal market, as we've seen over the past decade, as long running grocery stores have disappeared - Darrenkamps, Mussers, Willow Valley, Foxes, etc. Sadly with so few customers walking the aisles how long can Herrs stay open? We enjoy what it offers as a locally owned store but clearly we're not in the majority these days.
As for John Herrs, the lack of inventory is a big concern. We take the time to shop there and support Herrs and then have to go elsewhere for things like chipped ham or cases of water. When it happens regularly, it's a pattern, and it costs consumer time and money having to go elsewhere. The store is rarely crowded anymore, and that's also disconcerting. I truly hope they can weather the economy and the changes in consumer shopping. John Herrs is an institution in Millersville and the trademark things like their delicious baked goods, iced sugar cookies, stuffed chuck roll, stuffed chicken breast or pork chops, etc. are worth the visit. Not to be forgotten, the help customers receive bagging and loading their car is a great old school touch that would be sorely missed. But I fear their best years are behind them and the inevitable...
Read moreAn excellent selections of meats! Some cuts of meat are cheap! However, I had a question about a particular cut of meat and the butcher seemed to be in a bad mood and answered basically by saying "I dunno." The other people behind the meat counter were nice but know nothing about cuts of meat. The bakery is small but they have delicious small pies. The seafood selection is basic and the price seem to be average, meaning high but that's everywhere. Their meat, turkey and chicken pot pies are home made and delicious! Far superior than other pot pies. Chock full of veggies and meats. Egg prices are cheap! They have a good hot bar with nice soups.
UPDATE: I think it's hit or miss with the meat department if you have questions. I was there the other night and the guy that was helping me answered all of my meat questions without an attitude! They have ground sirloin and ground round! Not many places have these meats. Prices aren't bad either and if you buy three or more pounds of the ground meat the price drops. So if you can get past the occasional rude meat counter personnel you'll find a good meat selection and with cuts of meat you won't...
Read moreI'm starting to wonder why I come back here? Went into the store at 8:15 on Saturday morning 8/9/25 into the bakery and this is what I found. Your sign says "made fresh daily" and clearly that is misleading. Aside from this, I regularly find expired dairy and cheese (moldy inside the package and hanging in front) products for sale in the dairy section. I'm not sure if it's a profit loss and management issue or the employees aren't properly trained for food safety and to check expiration and sell by dates. If I have to go to another store to find what I came to your store for, I'll just simply go there first next time. On a positive note, most of the cashiers I interact with are friendly and personable. There is one lady at register 7 who always ties my bags shut like I'm going to steal something walking the 30 feet past the lottery ticket machine out the exit door. I really want to keep supporting a local family business, but you are making it harder and harder for...
