The historic National Fish Hatchery also includes an Aquarium. I got to see blue catfish in the Aquarium, which is the biggest type of catfish in America. I also got to see an albino common snapping turtle called Miss Piggy. I then went to the back of the Aquarium to the actual hatchery, where I got to see employees pour nutrients to the Louisiana pearlshell, a species that is critically endangered in the wild and is found mainly in the Kisatchie National Forest near Alexandria. Workers there are trying to increase their populations by nurturing them in this facility. I also got to meet an alligator snapping turtle, a species that is endangered in the South. Overall, I had a great experience because I got to interact with some amazing creatures and realized how many species are being threatened right now due to human interaction, pouching, and also environmental damage. I hope you all can check this out and gain an awareness of the world that we live in and also be cognizant on how our actions on a daily basis can impact the survival of a certain...
Read moreIn reading the other reviews here, I don't see anyone mentioning a great aspect of this little jewel. We are nature/bird lovers and the walk along the levee was the best part...just being outdoors and a lot of bird activity including some species that we just don't get to see at home which is about 60 miles away. The staff are welcoming. The mini aquarium is very nice...take time to actually read up/study on some of the species housed there before you go and I think it may take more than 10 minutes of admiring these animals for what they are...some of them are basically living fossils, being the descendants of species that have existed for a long, long, long time. Anyway, I wish we lived closer because I would love to be able to walk the levee area in...
Read moreThis is a small but nice aquarium. The hatchery is located on an original Caddo village so they have dioramas of the village and artifacts found on the grounds as well. There are fish, turtles, and an alligator named Kevin. I love that there's a ledge all the way around the room so kids can easily stand and walk on it to see into the tanks without parents having to pick them up. They have nice bathrooms but if you're in there too long without moving, the sensor lights turn off, leaving you in the dark. You'll have to use your phone light to light up the stall after that. Don't ask how I know that. 😌 This is a quick little...
