Ocean State Job Lot — Local services in Naugatuck

I don’t typically like these kinds of stores but since moving to Naugatuck I have come to like this Ocean State Job Lot. We visit it mostly for a few specific purchases. The bird feed prices in most cases simply can’t be beat. Suet blocks are half the price as other stores for the exact same product. Nyjer and Black Oil Sunflower seeds are also often on sale at unbeatable prices. The best buy in seed though is 10 pounds of shelled peanuts for $11. Prior to finding these we were buying 2 pounds at Costco for $5-$6. Of course the Costco peanuts were meant for human consumption but the birds and wildlife do not care. We also buy a lot of sauces, glazes and spices that we simply don’t see in other stores. We buy a lot of flower pots and solar lights because they are cheaper than anywhere else. They last just as long as the brands we buy elsewhere. It’s all the same import low quality so why not save some money. This store is also a great place for inexpensive area rugs, deck and lawn furniture etc. Is it the same quality as the stuff costing 5x to 10x more? Of course not but it’s affordable and the quality exceeds the cost. The store is a bit tired and dingy but that’s typical of stores like this. Most of the staff is friendly and helpful. Very disappointed. Went today around 10:30 am Saturday morning to shop and found they are closed until 12:00 Noon now for "cleaning" Isn't that what early morning or overnight shifts are for? Sorry but you just lost a regular customer, I'm not going out after noon on a weekend to shop at your store,I always shop and get all of my weekend shopping done well before noon.In fact OSJL is usually my last stop as I sometimes spend a good 30-40 minutes shopping and picking up all manner of items, some I need some I just want when I find them at reasonable prices. As for the recommendation on the sign to shop at the Seymour location, no thanks, I'm not driving 20 minutes away completely out of my way. I shop everything in Naugatuck due to the convenience of having so many shops located close together. If you had been doing this since the beginning of Covid, I might understand, but it's been a year of business as usual and now you decide to inconvenience customers because you are too cheap to hire people to clean overnight or early morning hours. This store is charging 2 % to every item they sell so they can pay there employees more during the virus. I was never even told about it. I read the receipt after noticing every item was more then the price listed. The receipt says you can ask for a refund but don’t you think someone should ask you up front if you would like to donate and not just charge it and hope know one notices! I agree these employees deserve more to putting themselves out there but this company is making tons of money and we as customers are spending our money there which benefits the company. There should be the one paying not the customers who are supporting them! There are so many people out of work right now and ocean state is putting more of the burden on there customers. I send corporate a email and I’m posting this because I will never again shop at one of there stores. I will do my best to put the word out to as many places as I can about what there doing to there customers. Horrible in a time like this there...
