My wife, my sister, and I decided to drive up to the Canadian border and take the short hike to High Falls on the Pigeon River. The trail is an easy, paved path with a few wooden stairs, making it accessible for most people.
The walk itself was pleasant, winding through the woods until we reached the viewing platforms.
The moment we arrived, the roar of the water filled the air. High Falls is truly a sight—at 120 feet, it’s the tallest waterfall in Minnesota. Watching the Pigeon River rush over the edge and crash into the gorge below was mesmerizing. We snapped a few of pics from the overlooks and the different viewing spots, each giving us another angle of this natural wonder.
A fun bit of history: this stretch of the Pigeon River was once an important travel and trade route for Native Americans and later for voyageurs in the fur trade. Grand Portage itself gets its name from the nine-mile portage trail traders carried their canoes and goods along to bypass these powerful falls. Standing there, it’s easy to imagine how significant this spot was centuries ago.
After taking it all in, we wandered down to a quieter spot by the river and unpacked the simple lunch we had brought along. Sitting by the water, sharing a meal, and listening to the current was the perfect way to end the visit.

The park keeps the paved path nicely plowed in the winter. When it comes to the stairs up to the falls, you can count on others to have blazed a trail up to the viewing areas. It’s a short walk. You will need footwear that grips packed snow. The path has railings to help keep you upright. In case you need it, there is even a loo back in the woods (just at the place where you start to climb). It’s open in winter. Lots of free parking available at the park too. This waterfall rewards your effort...
