Big Rock Garden — Local services in Oʻahu

I visited Big Rock Garden in Waimanalo to purchase stepping stones for my yard. My first visit to their business over a year ago was at their old location in Mapunapuna. Richard and Pat (owners) have poured a lot of thought and effort into creating a beautiful nursery and showplace for their unique landscaping enhancements. I was impressed by their displays of water features, samples of landscaping rocks, pavers, rock tables and rock benches. They fabricate on-site the moss rock veneers which upgraded my sad-looking concrete block yard wall into a beautiful, authentic-looking rock wall—a perfect backdrop for tropical plants, which Big Rock Garden has in abundance! They have a great variety of very healthy looking plants along with a large selection of ceramic containers.

Chelsea’s and Richard’s customer service was stellar. The employees all were pleasant, helpful and efficient. Chelsea showed me their stepping stone inventory, as well as a sample arrangement of rocks. They have photos of prior installations of their products to help customers hone in on designs. They don’t do installations themselves, but they provided me with a few referrals for delivery/installation.

Chelsea kindly took me on a cart tour of the grounds as we discussed plants. What struck me most besides all their congeniality was the attention paid to creating a visually appealing nursery and showcase.

During this past year of Covid lockdown my husband and I worked on re-doing one side of our driveway. We pruned American Guava trees (I use the fruits to make jam and jelly), removed, trimmed, planted and re-planted other trees and plants. Then came the big task. What do we do with the ground? We decided to build a little garden and then cover the remaining ground with stepping stones and river rocks. Enough stepping stones to provide a path to pick guavas/vegetables/herbs and river rocks to cover the remaining area. We were provided excellent service by Tanya and Chelsea at Big Rock. They treated us like family and made our project seem like their project too. We told them the general shape and sizes of the stepping stones that we needed and they quickly dispatched one of their fabricators to assist them to move layers of stones from their pallets until we found what we wanted. Everyone was very professional and caring. It really impressed us that Big Rock manufactures the stepping stones on property and the stones look like real lava rocks, not concrete. We are both 70+ so it took us a few months and several trips to Big Rock to imagine, plan then create our new landscape. I LOVE Big Rock! Visiting their showroom is so inspirational! We were really excited to use their old lava flow veneer on our new house and on a retaining wall and it looks FANTASTIC! I could not be happier! All of our neighbors love it too! I've now experienced both: We had a traditional rock wall outdoor shower in our old house and all kinds of critters lived in there, including toads! That is one thing I really like about Big Rock veneer, no place for those critters to hide! Plus with the CMU underneath I feel like it's way more solid construction with the veneer.
