I am only giving this place 3 stars, because I have been going here since I was a child, and some of the "improvements" they have made kind of took away the feel of this place being a hidden gem in the woods.
Let's look at the positive first. This Waterfalls is Handicap Accessible! You can take the paved walkway (it is a hill so be careful), all the way down to the fake cement stone area at the first falls. You can view the falls without having to go down any steps. The second falls are not handicap accessible.
People every year create pools at these falls by stacking rocks and slowing the flow of the water and you can swim and hang out in these pools. People have even created little waterslides out of the rocks.
There is an outhouse here, ample parking, and it's very modernized now. You now need a Michigan State Park Rec Pass to enter this area. (this wasn't always the case).
Now the bad. It can be extremely crowded for swimming, and sometimes people will fish up stream and you will find a lot of hooks and lures in the swimming areas, so be careful.
Again, the place is no longer a hidden gem. Paved pathway and ramp kill what used to be such a cool hidden spot!
Regardless of all of that, this is the only actual natural waterfall in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, so it's worth...
Read moreI've loved Ocqueoc since I was a little kid. Being able to swim in a natural swimming hole by a waterfall is an experience like none other! I hadn't been here in over a decade, and they have really improved the park! There's picnic tables, grills, and a paved path down to the river. The river itself remains unchanged from when I was a kid, save for a very natural looking stairway cut out of the natural limestone for easier access down to the water. I had an absolutely wonderful time! You do need a state park passport to visit, but I was able to purchase one easily and it was well worth the money! I would NOT advise allowing young children to swim alone or without a life-jacket, the water is around 4 feet deep near the falls and the waterfall creates natural currents which are quite strong. As well, one should be careful on the rocks as they can be slippery from the algea as it is a natural river. Otherwise, great fun for the whole family! An absolute MUST VISIT for anyone...
Read moreListen if you're from Michigan and you've never seen a waterfall before then you should go see this it's very pretty and the scenery is beautiful but it is Testament also to the lack of Elevation change in the lower peninsula as well as the availability of bedrock near the surface. In a place like Western New York it wouldn't even qualify as a waterfall. In most places where they have water falls this is more like a step than a fall. With that being said it is a beautiful area it is a beautiful river forever it's fun in the summer people swim in the river Along the series of small steps that it takes down in the park area in the Winter it is serene and beautiful and no one is there so a great place to visit if you haven't been but don't be expecting something...
