Had shoulder sugery and my surgeon was amazing and the procedure was successful. That is not what this review is reflecting. I had shoulder sugery on 2/13. My post-op nurse Scott, when I was trying to stand the first time after waking up I felt really exposed as my gown was completely open in the back. I asked him to please cover my ass (sorry but that's how I said it). He said no. I started to cry and said i was embarrassed to walk the hall to the bathroom and to please cover me. He grabbed both my shoulders, that hurt like hell as one had just been operated on. Gave me a shake like I was a stubborn child and with his face inches from mine snapped that "i get you are embarrassed but I don't care about your embarrassment " I still had to walk across the hall to the bathroom after getting my gown closed myself. My dad hadn't said anything up to that point but when he said "hey" Scott threatened to have him removed if he continues to tell him what to do. All he said was "hey"...like a she just had surgery and woke up so maybe be a little nicer kind of hey. I was given a balloon thing called On-Q (pain killer/nerve block) but nobody told me the side effects until I was experiencing them. Severe nausea, difficulty breathing, speaking and swallowing. I was very distressed and panicking because it felt like a horse was standing on my chest. My nurse scott didn't seem concerned but kept asking me every min or so if it was improving ( this didn't help any).he seemed to think i was being dramatic. I wanted the On-Q balloon removed and was refused multiple times. It was threaded with a catheter into my neck. The anesthesiologist told me to clamp it off so it won't give me medicine until my symptoms subside in the morning. All I could do was worry about the side effects coming back and not being able to really breathe for the 4 days it takesto deflate. And i told him that. Finally it was removed after I threatened to rip it out of my neck myself. I could finally breath and speak almost normal by around 5AM but i couldn't rest at all. The female nurse (wish I knew her name) was very compassionate and supportive of my decision to want it removed given my level of distress. SHE actually called the anesthesiologist (i could hear her talking to him) to inform him i wanted it removed and to get the ok to take it out for me. When I was finally allowed to leave at 7pm; my sugery was at 10am. I had asked to go home multiple times. I had to remind Scott to remove my IV port since he was more interested in getting me out of the room. Practically jogged while wheeling me to the exit. Had the decency to at least help me buckle my seatbelt. He might be a good RN and may have been having a bad day (no excuse) but my body just went through hell and a little compassion would have gone a long way. I've had one other traumatic incident at a different hospital (carpal tunnel release) where the nerve block wasn't administered soon enough to take effect before the surgeon started cutting. I blackedout from pain as i tried to get off the operating table in my panicto get away from what was hurting me...this experience ranks right up there with that one. The surgeon was amazing though and did a great job but I wish I had just postponed it to be done at olympia orthopedic surgery center and never gone to providence. Everyone was aware of my anxiety from the previous experience from the start and it was even noted in my chart. Pre-op nurses asked me about it so I know it was in there. Those ladies were very kind and actually helped my anxiety before surgery. I also mentioned it and was very clear about my anxiety and concerns. I spent the whole night vomiting bile, unable to breathe, speak or swallow properly. Got zero rest. Nobody from providence or olympia orthopedic has even called me to see if I am even alive after going home. It's going on 4 days now. Maybe they will call on Monday and respond to my message to the surgeon about clarification to the discharge instructions...

From my families experience with this hospital, three stars is a very fitting grade for the general level of care in regards to their birthing center.

Pre-Baby Care: When your loved one needs hospital treatment while being pregnant, the birthing center is what will handle her care. From what I understand, this is because they have the knowledge and experience to properly treat mommy without needlessly endangering the baby. Which sounds reasonable.

That said, the quality of care we received during our time here for pre-baby issues, was pretty terrible. My wife was originally sent home after visiting triage without them noticing she had a UTI. Which compounded into much more serious issues, resulting in us again being back in triage with more significant concerns and my SO being in some impressive pain.

Now for consults for specific issues that the care unit isn't qualified to diagnosis, they will bring in the appropriate doctors from outside the unit. However, in our experience, these outside consults worked extremely poorly with the primary care doctors (the doctor in charge of your loved ones care). In this case, it was Urology. Absolutely terrible experience with the majority of these doctors, who seemed to not understand that they offer advice not orders, and would have to explain their advice to their patients.

At no point throughout treatment was there a conclusive diagnosis for the issue that ended up being a hospital stay for over 10 days. There where a lot of maybes and mightbes, and the push for treatments, and eventually after a lot of pain, time and money one of these combinations did eventually work. That said, if they recommend you get a stint, think long and hard about taking this advice. My wife often says it was more painful than labor, and only left in for two or so days.

Delivery: It is hospital policy that if you are not 4CM dilated, they will observe you, may give you some pain meds, and if you do not dilate to 4CM they will send you home and ask you to home back later.

The Doctors and Nurses that actually delivered our baby, where absolutely amazing. The nurse was confident and in charge. She got the Doctor when she needed to, and then the Doctor took over from there. The Doctor we had during deliver was outstanding. Absolutely no issues there. Was a little put off by follow-up nurses that valued mommy skin time for over an hour, but afterwards kept finding excuses to delay any daddy time. Which is downright jacked up. Furthermore the follow-up nurse was unnecessarily rough but not enough to correct her on the spot. Also, the only nurse out of multiples that had our baby pretty damn unsettled.

Post Baby Care: Again, it felt like there wasn't a terribly large amount of consistency in treatment, like everyone wasn't on the same page. Nurses who where specifically tasked to this unit didn't seem to have an experienced grasp on baby benchmarks as was briefed by the lactation consultant. (Speaking of the lactation consultants are amazingly helpful and gave a perfect outline of reasonable expectations with breastfeeding).

Also, they seemed ill equipped to properly teach patients how to breastfeed and solve breastfeeding issues, although baby's eating and latching is a huge part of post baby care. It finally took a Nurse that happened to be on shift from the ICU, to give my wife a fantastic work through of the process, which solved our issues entirely.

My largest critiques for this Hospital.

When one person is in charge. They need to be in charge, so treatment is coherent and staff is accountable.

Doctors need to understand that they give advice, not Orders. It's fantastic that you're educated in your field, but a certificate alone isn't going to warrant my blind trust in your choices. And if you can't explain in layman terms why you are recommending your treatment plan, or don't even bother to explain yourself at all, you're asking for a level of trust that most reasonable people would rightfully feel...

When I was in the hospital June 13 to have the emergency chest catheter inserted, I asked several nurses and doctors who the hospital was named for. Only a couple said someone named Peter? I asked, what guy named Peter, not one person could tell me. One person said "well, I think the Sisters of Providence built it. I said yes, and the Sisters of Providence are an order of nuns, within the Roman Catholic Church, so the Church built your hospital, and most of the hospitals and orphanages, and homeless shelters, all over the world. Thus, it is named for Peter, the rock who Jesus chose to build His Church on. Thus, that's why you have a job here to help people. Understand it now, "Providence St. Peter's Hospital"? And I'm a Protestant.

While I was there for emergency chest catheter insertion for dialysis, I had to come out of my "room" an area with curtains, while I waited for my ride, and had to deescalate a situation, where an elderly man in a wheel chair, who was frightened and wanted a blanket was yelled at by a nurse and then called security on him, who was clearly ill, and frail. The guy looked 85-90. And 2 "security officers" dressed in black tactical gear that looking more like S.W.A.T. than the actual units, came down, and I said "you need to deescalate the situation fast. You can clearly see this man is very old, and may have dementia, or other issues, and is no threat." Both of them told me "to mind my own business and go back into my room." "I said you're not gonna order me to do anything, I can stand here if I choose, and if I don't go back inside the curtain, what are you going to do? Attack me? One of them closest to me, then said what do you want?" And I said "I'm here to make sure you don't do something stupid." He then knew I would film him, and intervene at my own risk if they tried to do anything to this elderly patient. They then shut up and later blamed it on the threat of some non-violent protesters on public property, by the hospital the day before, who were there protesting the quarantining of a new born baby, away from the mother, who tested negative, and then positive in two tests.

Additionally, I had outpatient surgery scheduled there for 7/12/20, and Friday afternoon (7/7/20), because apparently they are requiring all patients getting out patient or in patient surgeries to be Covid-19 tested, at some drive through location in Hawks Prairie.

This girl who called me, was rude, and demanded that I must go by 4 pm that day, and then be quarantined alone at home for 7 days. When I said it's only 5 days until the procedure, which any delay would put me at higher risk due to the circumstances. Her name was Kelly. Before I could explain that I am on dialysis 3 times per week, and I only have a certain amount of Wa. FMLA leave to last 12 months, and how am I gonna skip dialysis and not work, since I already used over half of my time, since I was near death, when my kidneys failed forever, and had to use 6-7 weeks of leave to keep my job of 4 years, to heal, even though me and my doctor were monitoring my labs weekly.

So my Nephrologist thought that the surgeon canceled it, but I called after I was told it was cancelled, and found out the surgeon didn't cancel it, but the "supervisor" of Covid-19 test scheduling told me that she was listening to the girl's side of the call, and apparently thought I was being non-compliant. Which I basically only got the one question in, and admitted to me that she instructed Kelly to end the call. Wow! I called back 2 more times, and she immediately hung up on me. (3 times). I called another dept. and asked what do I do? And a woman called from the same hospital a few minutes later, and they wouldn't answer the phone. The woman who cancelled my urgently needed surgery was Deana Britt, from her own mouth. I have the evidence. #Providence
