Husband bought me birthday cake here in August; my favorite is German Chocolate - have had very good experience with Yoder's cakes in past. This one, however tasty, did NOT contain German Chocolate flavor at all. In fact, I wouldn't be able to identify the cake as anything chocolate. That said, when I looked at the ingredients on box, the only chocolate listed was "Choc Chps". The icing was great -- coconut pecan as expected -- but this was NOT German Chocolate cake! I contacted Yoder's for an explanation & rec'd a reply a month later apologizing for my disappointment in the cake & verifying that chocolate chips are the only form of chocolate in the cake -- no German chocolate, no cocoa, etc. I've suggested to them that they rename this cake since it is deceptive to call it something it is not. Or perhaps they could revise the recipe? Beware!
Update to this post: Revisited Yoder's 1st week of Oct per Michael Yoder's invitation to come out & taste test their improved German Choc cake. New recipe uses cocoa, oil, & sugar instead of semi-sweet choc chips -- still no German's Sweet Chocolate -- but they believe it's much better with more chocolate flavor. Prior to my visit, I baked made from scratch cupcakes using German's sweet chocolate so that we could compare Yoder's cake with the real thing. Took along a friend & 2 of my unfrosted cupcakes -- met with Michael Yoder who seems very accommodating & sincere in his efforts to satisfy customers -- impressive amount of energy expended in this instance alone. Michael brought out 2 full size German Choc cakes -- 1 to taste test & 1 for me to take home. While we were cutting into the test cake, Yoder's Customer Service Manager, Esther, was invited to join our group. We all tasted the Yoder cake & then took bites of my cupcakes. Several store customers also joined in the fun. The Results: majority of tasters preferred the cupcake flavor containing German's sweet choc to Yoder's cake w/ cocoa, oil, & sugar. All liked the coconut/pecan frosting of Yoder's cake. Michael received these comments right then & there; even Esther said she liked the cupcake flavor better. I guess sometimes you just have to be true to an original recipe. Don't know what Yoder's will do going forward; it was unclear when we left the store whether or not they will tinker with their recipe some more, but in my opinion, for this cake to be German Chocolate, it should contain German's sweet chocolate. Anything else is a Yoder's Sweet Chocolate cake. Many thanks to all...

Read moreThey have a lot of things homesteaders and bakers use and need. Their bulk hard red wheat, [can't remember if spring or winter] was cheaper than palouse. They have a LOT of curious and neat stuff in the dry goods section. A lot of candy. Prices on baked goods were extremely high. $12 for a lemon chess pie. The deli puts their sandwhiches in a panini baker which makes the bread so hard it's inedible. They will make another, but without heat the cheese doesn't melt. They might consider giving a choice of a microwave.
They have bagged apple filling, boston creme pie/donut custard, lemon filling. Lots and lots of stuff. Other than the everyday food, the prices are extremely high. It's a chain store, staffed by Amish or Mennonites. It's quite aways away for us, but we'll be back. The dry goods they have are amazing. Oh, and 32 oz bottles of wright's hickory smoke. $7.39, when a 3 oz bottle was 4.89 I THINK. You MUST take your time and look...
