There are lots of places to buy chocolate in Oshkosh, or really the Fox Valley in general, but this is the place you should be going if you're giving chocolates to anybody you actually care about 🙂
Even before I lived in Oshkosh, my family members would give Hughes as presents, especially during Christmas time, and it was always the best present to get! But if you need to bring chocolates for any occasion (during the time of years that they are open) they never disappoint!
Now that I do live in Oshkosh (and right around the corner) people get Hughes for all sorts of occasions from me! We love giving Oshkosh themed presents and baskets, and they all include Hughes and Carmel Crisp (another place in Oshkosh you should definitely visit if you haven't been)!
Getting chocolate from Hughes is also an experience! As you pull up to the normal-looking house on the very normal street..... And see a full line of people going through the side door down into the basement where the chocolate is made, packaged and sold..... It's a very surreal experience. The family that runs the chocolate shop and owns the house do the best job of accommodating everybody in the tight quarters and are super friendly helping you pick out what you would like!
My personal favorite selections are the dark chocolate melt away mix and oysters during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays...... But you should also try the milk chocolate that's sorted and puddings during Easter!
The chocolates are a little pricey compared to retail stores... But a lot of quality comes with that. And I do believe they are still cheaper than Oaks chocolate not far down the street (and Hughes chocolate is significantly better)
I can't say enough about this chocolate shop! If you've never been this is definitely a destination location! Please stop and try it at least once in...
Read moreI was going to be in Oshkosh on business & was told of Hughes Chocolates by a friend who had been gifted it years earlier. She told me the meltaways were so smooth & creamy, she hadn't had anything like them since. She asked if I would stop & pick her up some (dark chocolate) , which of course I did, I obviously picked myself up a box (milk chocolate). When I opened mine & had my first taste of Hughes Chocolate my first thought was maybe I'm just a bit of a chocolate snob. Since I don't eat chocolate often I expect the chocolate I do purchase to be exceptional. This unfortunately was not I would categorize it as average (not Hershey bar average but candy company average). Yes the chocolate coating was smooth but the interior was gritty. When I asked my friend who recommended Hughes she said the quality was not as good as she remembered. It's a quaint business model. The staff when I said I had never been there kind of rolled their eyes & the girl asked do you at least have an idea what you want & another employee yelled I can help someone who knows what they want. So customer service I would say was not a best first impression. The stairs going to the basement are very narrow & steep. Being a person with mobility limitations it was a bit frightening going down the stairs. Having an option for persons with disabilities would be very helpful. The pricing is very fair & the smell is absolutely amazing. There was a very courteous gentleman at the entrance door opening it for customers and managing the flow of customer traffic who was exceptionally nice & friendly. Date of visit 12/18/23 time:...
Read moreThis quaint family owned business has been a part of our Holiday traditions for over 30 years. These glorious, expertly made chocolates have always been gifted to us from our Wisconsin relatives. This year, we decided to make the journey to this coveted chocolate wonderland ourselves. We were suprised to find that this factory is in a home in a regular neighborhood. There is plenty of street parking. You enter through the side door of the home by walking up the driveway. People are coming and going and once you enter, you will soon understand the systsm. The employees have their areas up and down each stairwell where they are each doing their part to create this seamless and expertly run business. If you are unable to climb up and down the narrow, steep stairs, you may be able to express your needs to an employee. It is a very tight space and every inch is used seamlessly. There are beautiful cursive handwritten menu/ product lists taped to the areas around and under the stairs. You turn to one area right in a nook under the stairs and place your order with the cashier. Your order is gathered and handed to you instantly. The whole process of buying $100 worth of expertly hand crafted, homemade chocolate goodness took us less than ten...
