🌟🌟🌟🌟 A Historic Gem Reborn – Green River Distilling Co.
Visiting Green River Distilling Co. in Owensboro, Kentucky, felt like stepping into a living piece of bourbon history. Established in 1885 by J.W. McCulloch, it's the 10th oldest licensed distillery in Kentucky, proudly bearing DSP-KY-10 . The distillery's rich legacy includes being the most advertised whiskey in the world before Prohibition, with the catchy slogan "The Whiskey Without Regrets" .
After a devastating fire in 1918 and years of dormancy, the distillery has been meticulously restored, resuming production in 2016 . Today, it stands as a testament to resilience, blending historical charm with modern craftsmanship.
The tour was both informative and intimate, offering insights into the distillation process and the storied past of the Green River brand. Tasting their signature bourbons, especially the 5-year Kentucky Straight Bourbon, was a highlight—each sip a testament to their dedication to quality and tradition .
While the distillery itself is modest in size, the experience is enriched by the warmth and knowledge of the staff. The guided tours provide insightful glimpses into the distillation process and the history behind each product. It's a personal touch that larger distilleries often lack.
Located near the scenic Ohio River, the distillery's setting adds to its charm, offering a peaceful retreat with picturesque views. Though it may not boast the grandeur of some of Kentucky's larger distilleries, Green River's authenticity and dedication to craft make it a worthwhile stop for any bourbon enthusiast.
Final Thoughts Green River Distilling Co. may be small, but it leaves a lasting impression. Its rich history, unique offerings, and personalized experience make it a hidden gem on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Whether you're a seasoned bourbon aficionado or a curious traveler, this distillery offers a refreshing and heartfelt glimpse into Kentucky's...
Read moreThe tour was very interesting & the tasting was a good representation of the variations in the bourbons produced. I liked the honey variety the best (sadly it was out of stock for purchase when I was there). But the most impressive aspect of the O.Z. Tyler Distillery tour for me were the people! Everyone went above & beyond to be friendly & make it an amazing experience. Due to a GPS mishap I arrived about 10 minutes late to a tour I’d bought tickets to online. Not only did the staff allow us to go on the tour but a wonderful staff member even walked us over to the larger group & provided all the tour details to us along the way! The tour guide was also very friendly & knowledge, which made for an enjoyable & interesting tour. After the tasting we visited the gift shop to find a lovely cashier who provided interesting ideas on how to personalize a stave (part of the barrel) for a lovely home decoration or gift. I hadn’t heard of O.Z. Tyler before but the amazing people affiliated with this brand have won me over!!! I’d highly recommend the tour & the O.Z. Tyler brand. Already planning a return visit as a fun excursion for...
Read moreOur experience started with a nice guard at the gate. He pointed us to where we had to go to park (lots of spaces) and start our tour. We actually were the only ones on our tour so it was a private tour in all respects. Our tour guide I think was Taylor and she did a fabulous job of giving us a tour. She was knowledgeable and informative and fun as a tour guide. She even showed us a neat drinking game you could play using their unique bottle with a horseshoe on the bottom and a quarter. We got to see lots of different aspects of the distillery. The "thieving" part was especially fun where we got to take samples out of 3 different barrels. We got to taste these at the end in the tasting room as part of the offerings along with a couple of other bourbons or whiskey's. The staff was incredibly friendly and stayed a little later since we were the last tour of the day! The bourbons were nice and their prices good. I think a bottle was around $45. All in all I would recommend the tour ( barrel / thieving ) as opposed to the regular tour which I imagine would...
