Words can not express the range of emotions I am feeling at this moment. I have never been more angry, disgusted, or upset. I recently lost a dog to kidney failure and was looking for another dog to be a companion for my miniature pinscher. I adopted my min pin from a shelter in Macomb IL two years ago. I went to the Peoria Animal Welfare center to see if they might have a dog that would be a good fit. I visited with two puppies that were both adorable but one was a min pin female that had to have a leg removed due to being hit by a car. I thought she would be the perfect fit for my family as well as my other dog. I was informed that I needed to fill out an application and that she would only be held for 24 hrs. I filled out the application and was informed that my dog needed to be current on his shots and registration. It took me a few days in order to get my own dog to the vet and to the Sheriff's dept to get the registration since I work full time. By Friday of the week I had completed this task and phoned the shelter. I was then told that the dog needed to be spayed but that I could come and pay for her and wait till the following Tue to pick her up. Upon arriving at the shelter to pay I was informed that before I could pay I had to bring my children and other dog to the shelter for a visit. I told them that I lived 40 minutes away and that I had never been told that this was part of the process. The woman argued with me and stated she had told me. I think I would have remembered this detail beings it would be quite an inconvenience. So I miraculously was able to get my ex-husband to bring my children to Peoria and my dog for the visit. I was at work and not able to get the shelter before they brought the puppy out to meet my dog. When I arrived I was told by my ex that the dogs initially got along but that then the puppy became aggressive. That that director observed the interaction and denied the adoption. I went to the front desk and asked if they could again bring the puppy out so that I could witness the interaction? A man behind the desk dismissively said “NO” and turned and walked away.
If you work at a shelter wouldn’t you have to know a little about dog breeds and about animal behavior? I am no expert but I do use Google and was able to find out that Min Pin’s are notoriously dog aggressive. Plus, the dogs were in a strange place, and one is was disabled. The puppy is a puppy and is still learning appropriate behavior. When I first adopted my current dog he was extremely dog aggressive but he was young and has outgrown a majority of the behavior. Plus knowing dogs and the breed there are going to be dominance issues.
As I stated earlier, words can not express how disappointed I am at this point but I want everyone to know how horrible this shelter is. I will never return to this place. I feel sorry for the animals that are kept there. It is a kill shelter and with the process and staff’s lack of knowledge and professionalism I am sure many pets miss out on having loving homes. This is a...
Read moreHighly do not recommend this county at all nor their shelter. I had a multi pet license and provided amazing care of my dogs while being harassed by my neighbors on both sides doing all they could to make me miserable. All was good during the winter until my neighbors saw my dogs more and didn’t like them being on the other side of the privacy fence we had built before moving in. Becky was tired of getting complaints from my neighbors that instead of looking into it more and calling to talk with me nicely, she proceeded to just make all things worst and verbally harass me over the phone multiple times then eventually revoked my multi pet license. Becky would ask me over the phone what’s the need for owning so many dogs and told me I should rehome and keep 1 or 2. She also asked about my mental health being with owning dogs. Now I love dogs dearly and being around them completes me. One of the multiple reasons that she revoked my license was that two of my dogs were due for shots, those two dogs were never on my list of dogs for my multi pet license and never stepped foot in that house during the time I owned it! One was my dads dog that he had own for multiple months while the other was my friends that I hadn’t own for 2 months before I moved there. Another one of the reasons was the city having to remove waste from my yard due to not picking up dog Pooh. The city of Peoria was called by my neighbors but the city of Peoria and their workers did not pick up any waste and left due to there being no need for them to be there! All the others were neighbor complaints where an officer was sent to my door a few times due to reasons like dogs barking, Pooh in my yard, etc and all were proven to be pointless and wrong! Officer Armstrong was extremely kind and helpful during this all and just had to do what he was told by Becky. Unfortunately I had to make extra arrangements to move out of that county and will always avoid living there. If you are planning on moving to Peoria county, Do not. Or at least live outside of the city limits. It’s not worth the drama this animal...
Read moreMy family and I was at Grand view drive park too let our dog out. And the kids too play at the park. And we seen a cat that was sitting on the step. Either someone let there cat go there or it ran away from home. So we was being caring citizens so we called the animal control after hours and they gave us a number too call cause the cat looked very weak and hungry and cold. So we through we was doing the right thing but I guess not. The animal control lady showed up at 10:07 pm. And we was very relived. But we was wrong. First off she was very rude and unprofessional. She said well we are a after hours service and we only come on emergency because we work all day and we have too get out of bed. Too come get this animal and if it's not sick we don't take the animal because we a emergency only service. She yanked the cat out of my arms and proceeded too shove the cat in the carry cause she was mad cause she had too get out of bed. Slammed the cage shut. Put the cat in another cage in the truck and was throwing her self around shut her truck door and was flying out of the park like a bat out of he'll. Never telling us thanking for being caring people. And if she works with the animal control she should not have shoved the poor cat in the cage I would with people who are elderly and I would never treat them like that she should never be working with Animals. In my eyes that is a form of animal abuse for taking it out on that poor Cat. Please do something with your staff it's not right. I wil be contacting the mayor of peoria. This lady doesn't derseve too be here if we did that we would be fined for animal abuse and...
