I called this dealer looking to sell 700 silver dimes when silver was at $31.32 per ounce. The real silver value was $1,367, but he offered $1,000, which is a 26.86% fee. If I had time, I could have sold on eBay for around 15% over spot ($1,572), but I was in a bind and needed quick cashāso thatās the tradeoff.
What would have saved time is if he had told me his fees upfront. I was initially looking to sell 400 dimes, expecting a 20% fee (which would have left me with $726.18), but I quickly realized he preferred a larger transaction. He eventually counter-offered $1,000 for 700 dimes, which came out to a higher fee than I anticipated. When I pointed out his cut was between 25-30%, he denied it, which seemed odd since it's simple math.
He also wasnāt thrilled that I had dimes instead of quarters, mentioning, "we'd be counting dimes all night." Most dealers use scales, so that was unexpected. When I said I might just sell $500 worth, he lost interest. This was odd since that would take half the time to countābut I got the feeling he only wanted to do the deal if it was on his terms.
For comparison, another dealer (Nick Diamond) charged me only 10% in the past, but I couldnāt get to him in time. Some dealers charge worseāI once called a lady who wanted 40% and played dumb when I asked about fees. It took about a minute for her to finally tell me what she charges.
Bottom line: If you need quick cash and donāt mind a steep fee (that isn't disclosed upfront), heās an option. Heās available after hours, but you might feel like youāre a burden.
UPDATE AFTER HIS RESPONSE. Changing my review from 4 stars to 1. I was trying to save my house that day I needed to pay taxes to the county that night and now I"m forced to pay in full because I was unable to make it in time that night. Mike knew that I needed the money to save the house because I told him. He had no interest in helping it was easy to hear in his voice and I offered to take a taxi to come to him so he damn knows he wouldn't have had to go out of his way. And ebay has its own payments system you no longer need paypal. Paypal charges 13.25%. I'm changing my ranking because this was the ranking I wanted to give originally but I was trying to be nice. No one likes a BS artist. He could have told me his fees up front but I was lied to (as if he doesn't know what percent he charges) and his response was BS so I'm changing the ranking. Selling your silver on ebay will still get you 26.86% more than what he gives and it's easy to do and its an easy way to get 5 star reviews on ebay. Very easy. I don't have time to do that so I ended up getting rid of my silver with the other guy....
