Grunberg Schloss Collectors' Cabinet — Local services in Ponderay

When I planned out a road trip to visit 20+ coin shops around Idaho and Oregon, multiple people reached out and said that I absolutely had to make a detour to visit this collectors shop. I was hesitant since it would add two hours to my trip, but I'm glad I decided to visit.

Grunberg Schloss Collectors' Cabinet in Ponderay, ID, with a population of less than 2,000, became my favorite stop of day 3. Mark Gruner runs the shop and spent an hour talking with me about all things coin albums. He has a wealth of knowledge on coin albums and knew the owners of manufacturers such as Mehrig and Harco. He even let me go into the back room and see his personal numismatic library with 1000+ books and references.

There was an incredible assortment of coin-collecting supplies, including a massive wall of Whitman folders and Dansco albums/pages. Mark was in the process of bringing out inventory, so there were even more supplies in the back. They're not just a coin shop but a collectibles shop in every sense. I saw guns, ammo, jewelry, gardening supplies, and other knickknacks. They also had a vast collection of US coins and some world silver coins. I was able to stock up on some Dansco inventory at great prices.

Before moving from the area, I was a frequent customer of Marks shop, being a fellow coin dealer. I'm a little shocked that nobody has ever reviewed him. When I was a 12 year old coin geek, Mark gave me a ride to the Spokane coin show several times. I've rarely met a man so giving as what Mark has given to the hobby through and to fellow collectors. Mark was always giving talks at the local coin club and has held an officer's position on the board of the Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association for many years.

In buying collections myself as a dealer, I never even looked up the foreign coins (which he is highly adept at). I'd simply drop off a box and ask him to let me know what they were worth. His buy price was always better than I'd expected and he gave all the time you wanted in explaining each coin's history and value .

Mark is a wealth of knowledge on many subjects. Most impressive about this coin dealer is his unbreakable code of ethics. Growing up and becoming a coin dealer with a solid reputation myself, Mark Gruner was always the "ethical bar" that I strived to emulate.

I haven't dealt with Mark for over a year as I now live out of the area, but I will always value him as a truly honest...
