Spindel Eye Associates — Local services in Raymond

I was forced to do a "medical" eye exam in 2022 that apparently wasn't covered by my insurance and had to pay $540 out of pocket. I was upset about the bill so I went back to my old eye doctor in Haverhill Mass. where I had this same exam(eyeball scan) prior and after my 2022 Spindel visit. It was COVERED and OPTIONAL at my old eye doctor.

Fast forward to October 2025. I went BACK to Spindel for a routine yearly eye exam for glasses and contacts because I don't like driving to Haverhill. I was told at Spindel I "had" to get this "medical" eye exam or they wouldn't do my routine eye exam! I said that it wasn't covered with my old vision insurance and I wasn't paying for it when I didn't want it! They checked and said it "may" be covered if I get a referral from my PCP, which could have been told to me prior to my visit!

Now I have to find a new eye doctor because I refuse to be forced to pay for something I don't want or need to get an eye exam! Because some Dr may have seen something on results that no longer works there. It sounds like an all too common theme among all different types of doctors - dentists, PCPs, eye doctors. Forcing procedures upon you that are not covered or entered incorrectly so they force you to pay...

Absolutely the best eye appointment experience I’ve ever had.. and I’ve been going to optometrists for over 25 years. The facility was easy to find, had plenty of parking, and the waiting area was open and clean. Check-in with Abbie was super easy and she was very friendly. I especially appreciated that she was transparent about what costs I could potentially expect based on my appointment.

I was seen less 5 minutes of waiting, right on time for my 6:15pm appointment (love that they offer evening appointments on Thursdays). I was “triaged” by a woman whose name I didn’t catch but she was also just as friendly and professional. The equipment used to measure my eyes was all wiped down by the woman right before use, which was very comforting to know it was properly sanitized.

The rest of my appointment with Dr. P was absolutely phenomenal. She was thorough with my routine eye exam, very good at explaining everything to me slowly and so I could understand, and she showed empathy and patience throughout the appointment.

Everyone was friendly and professional. Very little wait time after check in, maybe 3 or4 minutes. The tech was a lovely young woman who treated me respectfully as she went thru the numerous tests she was conducting. Once done, Dr Prendergast came in and introduced herself. She was warm, friendly and maintained a professional deameanor, but made me feel she was there for MY eye health and nothing more. She found some irregularities in the back of the left eye, showed me the pictures of both eyes, where I could see and compare the troubled eye. She explained all that could be done, explained some of the dangers of a surgical fix, yet left it open to me to see the surgeon, or wait and check it out again, in 6 mos. She also explained why she felt a change in prescriptions wouldn't serve to help me see better, at this time. I really appreciated her honesty and frankness in her dealings with me.
