I have come to realize that beauty -- of design, of materials, of workmanship -- has its own special value. And if you are searching for such beauty in your home or workplace -- then you want to talk with Brett Porter in Raytown (MO). He is not only an extraordinarily gifted craftsman, he is the kind of person I seek who makes doing business a pleasure.
I found Porter Furniture through Google -- and am I ever grateful (to BOTH!). Why did I take the custom table route?
Within some months of moving into a new home, I found it frustrating beyond belief to find a table of the right dimensions and material for our somewhat short dining area (10x10 essentially) -- but with a lip of granite extending into the length of the room, taking another 12" 'off the width of the room...so a traditional 72" length would not work -- nor a 60" with 36" width...to fit 6. These were among my dilemmas (in addition to my being very particular about materials and workmanship while being careful on the budget side..
Finding and working with Brett Porter was a true pleasure. He was so curious, so focused and responsive in assisting me once I got him photos of the space and we discussed my partner and my preference for clean lines...the subtlety of colors between walls, flooring and carpeting -- and he was wonderfully thoughtful about helping me keep the price reasonable, using ash (a lovely hardwood/for which there was a local surplus and has gorgeous graining )... ALL in the interest of getting a piece that was going to fit the ambience, allow our entertaining and serve for everyday as well. We went through several shades of stain, and he was again, tremendously responsive in listening to my input and adjusting from one to another stain/giving me samples of the ash stained different colors to take back to our place...also making the top extra thick...and the result? An absolutely one-of-a-kind piece that takes our breath away at every seating -- over morning coffee, Sunday brunch and dinner for 6!
I include a photo in which you can see the beautiful graining, along with the unusual corners on this table. (Having a little trouble uploading additional photos but will try later)
We will return to Porter Furniture in a heartbeat for our next project/whether cabinetry, inbuilt shelving or furniture for our office space.
(and by the way, he treats his employees like an officer and a gentleman..very palpable the respect for all working with him that means a great deal to us in...
Read moreWe recently used Porter furniture to building a custom dining table and we could not be more pleased with the table. We met with several furniture makers in the KC area and Brett seemed like the right fit for us. We had a very specific vision and from our descriptions and a picture we found on the internet he created something that will last a lifetime. It is a strikingly unique table that fits our home and personalities.
Porter furniture listened to our ideas and brought them to reality. He had us out to the shop a couple of times during the process to look at the work and make decisions about small details that really mattered to us. His personal touch was much appreciated.
I should also mention that the price was very reasonable as was the timeline. Many other companies were several hundred dollars more for "customizable stock designs" and had completion timelines well into late spring/early summer 2023. Porter furniture had a fair price, a completely custom process, and from order date to delivery date was 8 weeks.
We have a few more projects in mind and will definitely be using...

For us, our project consisted of reusing wood from a 1960s cabin. We took the cabin down and saved sections of walls to repurpose as much as possible. Nine wall sections were saved and we dismantled the sections. We had spoken to Brett Porter 2 years prior to having the walls back home and dismantled. We then worked with Brett on a design for a dining table in the new home build where the cabin once existed. It turned out well beyond our expectations! Thank...
