What an awesome adventure with once-in-a-lifetime experiences! We lucked out with a sunny day (apparently, it rains more often than not in Alaska). Our guides, Ali and Kenan, were very welcoming and enthusiastic as well as knowledgeable.
During the safety briefing I kept hearing this weird squeaking noise. I found it difficult to listen. Even Ali stopped the briefing and looked around. Next thing we know the squeaking started moving under the dock beneath our feet. Soon, an otter head poked out! He ducked back under the dock and squeaked back and forth, poking his head out every now and then. Finally, he swam off. I was wishing touching distance of an otter!.
Then, we all got in our kayaks and headed out to look for sea stars or starfish. We saw a ton! They were purple! We saw some orange ones too.
Then we spotted some eagles watching us. Just as we were admiring the eagles, some sea lions appeared in front of us. They didn't wait for me to take a picture. Bummer.
So then we headed toward the island. Soon, we noticed blow from a whale. That immediately followed 4 more blows. 5 whales! Awesome. We all paddled faster to get closer. Next thing we know, the 5 whales all jumped out of the water with their mouths open. It turns out this was a bubble feeding. Which is a rare sighting. Ali and Kenan explained what a bubble feeding was. Their enthusiasm was really peaking at this point. But then so was mine.
We learned to watch the sea gulls. They could tell when a bubble feed was about to happen and they circled the area. We were able to watch four more feedings! Amazing.
About this time, my knees were aching from using the rudders so I stretched my legs out. I lost the rudders and couldn't get them back. Ali (or Kenan, I get them confused) stayed with us as we zig zagged our way back to the dock. Its a lot harder to steer a 2 person kayak than you would think. Next time, I'll just wait till the excursion is over to stretch my legs.
Anyway, I highly recommend this excursion! And ask for Ali and Kenan - they will...
ย ย ย Read moreWe went zip lining with a family of five - 2 adults and 3 boys ages 16, 14, and 12. We had a GREAT experience! We were on a cruise ship and called at the last minute to book something and the owner (Katie) was very accommodating. Pick up instructions were clear and easy. The transportation vans were very nice and the driver (Sarah) was talkative and informative about the area. It was about a 30 minute drive to the adventure park from the port area and with all of the commentary it was almost like a small tour of Ketchikan on its own. Once we got to the park, we were very pleased with the entire process. Our guides were Cade and Shea - and they were AWESOME! We were lucky enough to have only our family with the 2 guides for the afternoon. The safety and instruction portion took about 15 minutes. We did six zip lining platforms and a variety of other suspension bridge type obstacles for the next couple hours. Throughout the entire afternoon, they gave us ideas and suggestions to mix things up on the zip lines (ie: go backwards here, run and jump here, etc.) and allowed the boys to play some competitive games on the obstacles. We also learned a lot of cool facts about all the different trees in the area, we were a zip lining through. The forest area was very beautiful and the last two obstacles went out and back over the ocean. We were lucky enough to see some marine animals as well as blue herons. After the zip lining, we made our way to the rock climbing wall where we spent another 20 to 30 minutes. Following the completion of our activities, Shea drove us back to town. This is a family owned company and they offered a phenomenal service. If you have gone zip lining many other places, you might be looking for something a little more intense, but this was absolutely perfect for a family that had never done zip lining before. Also, the pricing compared to other places was very reasonable! Thank you for a wonderful afternoon...
ย ย ย Read moreBefore I booked this excursion online I called and spoke to them. We were going to Alaska on a cruise with our 80 year old mothers. They had always wanted to try ziplining but were always to afraid. My mother had 2 hip replacements and 2 knee replacements. Both ladies are active and determined, but I was still worried they would be able to get up to the platforms. The girl on the phone told me they needed to climb 25-30 steps to get to the first platform. We knew they could do that, so we decided to book it. It was the best decision of our entire trip!
To save money by not going through the cruise ship I booked online direct with them. They were great! Trevin picked us up at the meeting spot. He was easy to find and the van was nice and clean. We rode about 20 minutes to the site and then got all checked in. Trevin and Nick were our guides and they did a quick safety briefing and got us all set up in our harnesses. Our mothers climbed the tower, Nick hooked them up and after a brief, "I can't do this" they jumped. Nick and Trevin were so patient and reassuring to our moms, it gave them confidence to do things they didn't think they could do. I can't say enough about how great of a time this was for all of us. The first line was shorter and not to fast, but still very fun, which was perfect for beginners or people not comfortable yet. After the first line they get faster and longer and go through the tree canopies which are extremely beautiful. There are also a few different suspension bridges and also a climbing wall you can do if you want to as well. My wife and I have ziplined many times before so I wasn't sure what to expect with this since I was going to try it with my 80 year old mother. We had just as much fun as they did. This place is wonderful, the people, the lines, the bridges , the views, everything was amazing. You will love it!
Thanks to Trevin and Nick for being so...
