I've been visiting Winthrop Lake area, which now includes the disc golf course, years before this course was added. During the early few years of the course, I've had golfers tell me what a beautiful and challenging course it was - world class. It has hosted world championship tournaments for several years now. The course has now also expanded into what used to be a 9 hole golf course that closed several years ago. The sad part of this otherwise happy story is that Winthrop University, who owns and is responsible for maintenance of the entire course and lake, has begun to seriously neglect the maintenance. Grass gets knee-high before it is cut. Fences, bridges, and walkways are becoming overgrown, collapsing, and sometimes impassable. There is a beautiful natural area at the north end of the lake, where there was once a delightful viewing deck with a boardwalk through a small swampy, natural area full of wildlife. The boardwalk rotted, was taken up, but never replaced. The deck became decrepit and overgrown with brambles. The deck was recently redone, but very poorly constructed, so it is already starting to decline, and once again, fully overgrown with blackberry vines. I know this review sounds harsh, but it is a shame to see such a magnificent resource being effectively ignored. The course is still used, though perhaps less so except when they do a quick clean-up for a tournament. The nearby soccer and softball fields are still cared for as they always have been over the last 30 years since I've been a regular visitor. I hope this review reaches someone who can motivate the college...
