I am heartbroken. I prefer to support local businesses when I can, but it absolutely bit me in the butt this time. tl;dr, do NOT bring in items for repair.
In July, I brought two rings to The Family Jewels in Running Springs. One was my vintage engagement ring, which was thin and broken in two places. The other was my mother’s ring, for which I had lost the stone. I brought them into the store, and really enjoyed the conversation with the owner and his friends. We agreed that he would repair the engagement ring and he would get prices for me on a replacement stone for the other - either an opal or a blue zircon.
Weeks went by. I called again in mid-August after I hadn’t heard anything. I was told that he would have to go to LA to repair the ring and get pricing for the other, and he hadn’t been able to go yet. I was frustrated, but thanked him and waited some more.
Today, I called again, and was told the same story - he needed to go to LA to do it. Then, he went looking for the rings and couldn’t find them. Needless to say I was worried at this point - he sounded completely confused and disorganzed, but he said he’d call me back.

When he did, he said he couldn’t find them because they were all done! I was shocked - I never received a call with a quote, nor did I receive the choice of stones as we had discussed. I noted this in frustration, and his response was, and I quote, “Whatever, babe. I don’t know what to tell you. Just come by and get them.” No apology, just anger. My mouth was on the floor, and I just laughed and said ok.
An hour later, I drove over to pick them up. I walked in and gently said hello - I was unsure what to expect. Immediately, he said, “OH… Are YOU the girl who yelled at me on the phone?” I absolutely did not yell at him, but I agreed that I was frustrated for very good reasons. He told me I didn’t have to pay, but I insisted on paying for the work… Until I saw the rings. I didn’t like the stone he chose for my mother’s ring (“It was cheaper!” he says, but removed it). And my engagement ring, while repaired, no longer even remotely fit my ring finger - barely on my pinkie! When I said this, he said it was the same size as I left it, but it clearly wasn’t. Then his friends (who hang out there) all stood up and moved toward me, yelling that it was somehow MY fault! While I have an appreciation for their loyalty to their friend, that was NOT ok.
I’m so disappointed that almost two months later, I have an engagement ring that no longer fits and am still without a stone for my mother’s ring. No, I didn’t pay for any of it (at his suggestion), but I would gladly have paid for what I asked...
Read moreMy wife and I went here to get her wedding ring reset for our 10-year anniversary. The old band was semi-hollow and was showing a lot wear. They designed us this custom ring that included two additional amethyst birthstones for my daughters and added the additional diamonds on the outside of the ring. He worked with us to make a custom 3D model of what the ring would look like and then beautifully cast and set the ring. We couldn't be more happy with the way it turned out. This picture doesn't even do it justice; it looks much better in...
