KAYAKING WITH DOLPHINS! Do not leave the Saint Petersburg/Tampa area without doing this amazing kayak tour. Seriously. This now bumps the Everglades from the top of my list of Florida adventures. This half-day had everything: kayaking with cormorants fishing underneath you, kayaking with dolphins (!!) not only off in the distance, but literally swimming around your kayak, gliding through a tunnel among the mangroves, and a beach walk and/or swim with a chance to observe all sorts of marine life, with everything identified and contextualized by the outstanding guide. An example: our guide, Nick, taught us how to pick up crabs without being hurt or hurting them.

In contrast to what I have experienced on other dolphin tours, our guide did not move us along to keep to a schedule while the dolphins were interacting with us. He checked with every one of the five people on this tour and when we all said that we were happy to extend our time, he let us stay as long as the dolphins were engaging with us. An extraordinary half hour, unlike any other dolphin interaction I have had (and I do dolphin tours any chance I get) It was a mother bottlenose dolphin and child, with the mother keeping the baby tucked underneath her protectively for the first 15 minutes or so until she felt safe and then the two of them swam around and under our kayaks separately. I also try to do kayak tours when I travel as it’s such a great way to connect to a new ecosystem, and this really is the best I’ve done so far. By a lot.

I was a bit hesitant about kayaking here in southern Florida because : alligators. But this is all salt water so alligator-free!

We had the BEST tour today, thanks to Nick, who squeezed us in, after our tour got rained out yesterday. He was so flexible and easy-going, it made it all very enjoyable. We kayaked to Shell Key and just loved it! We saw so many amazing sights, including dolphins!! We couldn’t have gotten any luckier with our time out on the water. The swimming was great once we got to the key, too. The mangrove trail on the way back was a wonderfully unique experience. Nick is very experienced, knowledgeable and made everyone feel at ease and included. He’s a fantastic tour guide! So glad we were able to get on his tour, we couldn’t have asked for a better time. Great bang for your buck, too. Do not hesitate to book, you’ll regret it...

Great experience! They dropped off a kayak for me well out of the way on very short notice. Brought me a brand new dry sack and life vest with pockets. All the equipment was new and clean. Nick gave me helpful tips on finding shells and exploring the beautiful Shell Key wildlife preserve. Within the first 10 minutes on the water I saw dolphins throwing fish into the air and splashing around! Even spotted some pink flamingos! It was just an amazing time altogether!
