“My experience at Discovery Village was extremely disappointing. The problem was never the residents — it was the staff and management. Many staff members, including those who had been there for years, weren’t doing what they were supposed to be doing. They often covered for themselves and their friends, which created favoritism and drama.
I didn’t have any real issues with staff regarding my work; the problems were mainly how they would talk to me — disrespectful and unprofessional behavior that was consistent across all shifts. It didn’t matter what shift I was on; the disrespect was ongoing. I never said anything because I knew nothing would be done even if I reported it. Management often told staff to ‘cover your own ass’ (CYA) and to always report issues — I followed those rules, yet I was still targeted. I also felt targeted because of my skin color, which added to the challenges. One of the managers also told me that she talks to other staff members about my work ethics. I found this unprofessional and messy, as management should evaluate employees based on their own observations, not secondhand opinions. Additionally, I was asked to evaluate new staff, which felt unprofessional and unnecessary — why rely on me to judge someone else’s work instead of observing it yourself?
Management would often run with false claims or exaggerations about staff in order to terminate employees. This felt like scapegoating, as real issues were ignored and employees were let go unfairly. Once, a staff member on my shift told me about things he was doing that could have gotten him fired, yet management didn’t even know and never addressed it. This shows a serious lack of oversight and accountability. Some staff also engaged in unprofessional behavior, including making inappropriate personal advances shortly after I started, which created an uncomfortable work environment that management did not address.
I was told I was doing a good job, then suddenly asked to write a statement without explanation, and shortly after I was let go. One of the managers even said ‘good luck on your journey,’ which felt completely insincere — I didn’t need luck, because the day I was let go, I had already been hired somewhere else. I later found out that a med tech knew the reason I was fired, but it was never discussed with me directly. This reflects a lack of transparency and professionalism in how management handles terminations.
The facility is very short-staffed, which sometimes led to residents being at risk, such as falling because there wasn’t enough staff to watch them. Meanwhile, overnight residents were often left wet and neglected, which was acknowledged in meetings, yet accountability never fell on the right people. There were also cleanliness issues in the kitchen, with leftover food from the morning or day shift attracting roaches.
Discovery Village hires quickly but also lets people go just as fast. The environment is strict, inconsistent, messy, and at times felt discriminatory. Even when following the rules and reporting issues, staff were not always protected. Clearer communication, respect among staff, and stronger leadership would make this a much...

Read moreMy sister recently became a resident and my husband and I spent time with her checking places out to find the best fit for her. We all decided Discovery was the best place. We haven’t been disappointed. We have eaten with her, moved her in, and participated in activities. Roxanna was at our beck and call whenever, and I mean whenever we needed anything. She and Victoria gave us a warm and friendly tour. Ambassador and resident, Lucy, kindly greeted us and gave us an insiders tour. Mark, the executive director, with a happy smile, found time to stop and chat. Maddie, the activity director stopped at my sister’s room to invite us to a fun BINGO game, delivering us root beer floats. Jessica, at the front desk guided us, answered our many questions and always with a happy demeanor. Eric, maintenance, quickly and tastefully got her room clean and in order. The housekeeper (I’m sorry not to remember her name) stopped, introduced herself, and welcomed us. Ernest, transportation, seemed to always be around to add a cheerful touch, including giving a bouquet of flowers for her room. Corriina, in food service brought us delicious food, in style. We felt we were in a five star restaurant. Even the broccoli was delicious and the pecan pie was to die for. Courtney and her partner nurse were attentive, professional and kind. Wow! All in all a great place that I wasn’t hesitant to leave my sister at. I am not from SanAntonio so it is important for me to know she is happy, well taken care of and safe. Thank...
