Went there today for the first time since moving back to Utah. I arrived at 830-ish and was not allowed to tee off until 9:30 because of frost which is what it is I suppose. I have played other courses that allowed you to tee off with some dew on the course but not so much here. I really enjoyed the course it was shorter than I thought but challenging because of the narrow fairways. I was the first one out as a single so I was playing rather quickly and made the turn in just over an hour. Number 7 hole wasn't punched nor did it have a flag anywhere to be found. After teeing off on Nine they were cutting the fairways and green. Well the fairway mower decided that he didn't care I was standing over my ball and drove past me several times getting closer and closer. The green mower turned off his engine until I finished putting which is normal. So I finished my round and went into the clubhouse to let the guy Shawn I believe what happened. He didn't apologize but made excuses for the mowers actions. He said "Well it is a city owned course and we cant start mowing until 7 so he was just trying to get his job done before the crowd starts coming in". I responded that I know he has to get his job done but I was 8 plus holes a head of the twosome behind me he could have stopped and turned off his engine for 5 seconds. His rebuttal was " well that's probably not going to happen at a city owned course and we can't stop for everyone that is going to hit" I responded I understand that but in this particular situation it wouldn't have hurt because I was so far ahead. His response was " like I said its a city owned course so probably not going to happen". Almost forgot after hitting my tee-shot on 10 there was a grounds-man on the green taking is sweet time to move the pin. I waited 5 minutes for that to happen. That might explain why they didn't have too many people out playing because of that exact mentality.... just cause its a city owned course doesn't mean you should lack golf etiquette. 3 Stars cause the course was in...
Read moreI played River Oaks for the first time, and after not having picked up a club for a month. I definitely wouldn't recommend that, because it's a tough course that takes knowledge and precision. I think you'd need four times around it to know lines and a bit more about the greens.
Very nice people working there though . . . from pro shop to the grill / snack bar. I think for 2022 I'll join this course's men's association and move my UGA handicap card here. Great practice facilities too!
I do have a few reasons for my four-star rating instead of five. First, there were too many bad lies after drives that were in the fairway, so they really need to work on filling in some thin spots. Second, way too many unrepaired ballmarks on greens. I fixed a minimum of 3-4 per hole, and most of the time I absolutely had to in order to have a clean putt. Make people fix them, use staff to do it, or offer players a discounted / free round if they'll stick around for an hour or two after their rounds to go fix ballmarks. Third -- the hard-ground bunkers. I know there was some weather yesterday, so maybe it was just overly "wet" conditions, but I didn't find that I could play a traditional greenside "blast" shot with an open face / hitting an inch or inch-and-a-half behind the ball. Bounced right...
Read morePurchased an annual range pass before covid, now River Oaks is saying that they don't have my info recorded and I'm back to purchasing buckets again. I was going to just let it go but then I had an aggressive encounter with their "pro" (Derek something) while on the chipping practice green. He agrily came over and blocked my line and began fixing every so slight ball mark and gesturing frustration at me, even after I had previously been respectful to him around the green. The irony is that I practice at this course daily and leave the practice green in better shape than when I arrive, everytime. If I see ball marks I fix them and if I see divots I pick them up and repair them. In this case I was between practice reps and didn't even have a chance to fix any ball marks yet. I've been noticing a hot headedness from the staff at river oaks lately and it's time to move on and pick a new course to track my handicap. This is my first negative review on Google so hopefully this indicates how...
