It would be difficult to find a parking lot in this area that would be located so close to Appalachian Trail, practically on the trail itself. It may not be immediately apparent, as other reviews suggested, but if you take any of the multiple paths leading from the gravel into the woods, you will pick up the AT's white blazes right away, after a few steps - the trail goes parallel to the parking lot about 100 ft, if even that, in the woods. So, wherever you start, you will end up on the trail. This is not a large parking lot by any means (and parking services also use it to store gravel, it seems), so come early.
