Fantastic golf course. Every time I play here I’m humbled by the beauty and the price. Walking during the week this golf course costs your wallet $14 for 18 holes. The course was designed by Donald Ross which anyone who’s a golfer knows that he’s one of the best architects to ever put pen to paper and turn it into grass. The course requires driver only on very few holes but more likely requiring you to lay up and really think about your golf strategy. Excellent golf course to work on course management as there’s blind tee shots elevated fairways and undulation throughout the course. The greens roll smooth and true. Water comes to play on a few holes but is usually near the Teebox. Every time I play this course it’s in fantastic shape and the staff is anything and everything but unfriendly. For instance today I forgot my wallet I let the gentleman behind the desk know that I could punch in my credit card if needed he stated I would could just play through my 18 holes and come back and pay. Coming from Raleigh that would’ve never happened. All in all this is my favorite course that I’ve played in Sanford so far still don’t have the coin yet the play tobacco road but I would only imagine that golf course would frustrate me to no end. Quail Ridge is also a fantastic golf course in the...
Read moreBack with with a deep dive into the course. Today was a weird day, shot 16 over with 8 pars and a birdie. Too many holes with bad approaches despite my drives working well. Anyways, into the review.
Amenities 5/5 - They have a driving range, putting/chipping green, and a separate chipping/approach green with a large practice area
Tee Boxes 3.5/5 - They added a few new tee boxes that are small and hard, and considering the traffic, they are worn down badly. Most of the other tee boxes are fine.
Fairways 4/5 - There were no outstanding issues with the fairways other than some low spots and the occasional wear.
Greens 5/5 - Other than some inconsistencies in speed, they are fine.
Bunkers 5/5 - Still weird rating bunkers, I was only in one today and had no issue getting out. They are placed sparingly but purposefully.
Layout 4/5 - I am not biased in my reviews, but this course seems to be designed with fade bias. 8 holes vs 3 to be exact. Now mind you, most of them are doglegs that can accept a straight well placed iron, so they aren't unfair.
Overall, a solid 4 maybe 4.5 when you take the value into account. It's always busy so pace of play can be tricky. I enjoy playing here every so often so I'm surprised I haven't done a review yet....
Read moreThis muni course is an interesting, quirky layout that plays like two different courses. According to the course's website, the course was originally a 1934 Donald Ross design. In fact, the front-9, which measure only 2892 from the tips, is a short, tight bandbox that features some trademark Ross features, including postage-stamp sized greens, four of which are elevated. However, the back-9 was renovated several years b/c of chronic flooding. The result is a more conventional, longer (3341 from the tips), and unimaginative layout. Grass is always green, even during drought conditions, b/c the course has steady access to a reclaimed water supply. However, the greens are like putting on Brillo pads unless cut very short (which they rarely are), and the fairways are hard and difficult to hit off us. Add to that the average maintenance and the cart paths falling apart, and you have a course that requires to use most of the clubs in your bag, but is only fun to play once in a while. Very cheap green fees...
