I recently had the unfortunate necessity to interact with Woodlawn Cemetery in Joliet for the disinterment of my father, and my experience was overwhelmingly negative, with the sole exception of the manager, Mr. Avery. His kindness, prompt responses, and evident competence were the only positives in an otherwise distressing process.
The ordeal began with my request for information about disinterment for an autopsy. The office staff's lack of urgency and knowledge was immediately apparent, compelling me to seek external assistance from Fred Dames of Fred C Dames Funeral Home. Thankfully, his involvement expedited matters.
The process hit a major snag when Gina, my assigned "counselor", had us complete incorrect paperwork. Despite her promise to rectify her mistake by delivering the correct form to the plot owner, she failed to follow through, causing significant delays and a lack of communication.
Additionally, Gina's insensitivity was stark. Whenever I expressed concern about not receiving callbacks, she dismissively compared my situation to those of families with recently deceased loved ones, belittling my needs. The situation escalated when, after questioning a discrepancy in the timeline for approval, Gina reacted unprofessionally, even threatening violence against my funeral director. Her continued employment raises serious concerns about the cemetery's standards.
Organizational issues further marred the experience. A promise to send a receipt for charges to my card was forgotten, leading to confusion and unnecessary financial transactions later. It's baffling how such disorganization pervades this establishment.
Mr. Avery stands out as the sole beacon of hope in this chaos. His professionalism and empathy are commendable. However, based on my overall experience, I strongly advise anyone seeking cemetery services to consider family-owned alternatives, where compassion and efficiency are more likely to be found beyond just the...
Read moreI met with Family Service Counselor, Anthony Maugeri in late December of 2020, one week prior to my wife passing. From the very start, he was very professional and treated me like a grieving spouse instead of a potential customer. After talking for an hour, I felt like I had known him for years.
He patiently explained the options based on what I told him my family and I wanted. He provided a pressure-free environment and made sure all my questions were answered and gave me his personal phone number in case I had additional questions and needed to reach him over the holiday weekend.
I highly reccomend Woodlawn if you are looking for compassion and professionalism during you time of grieve.
Thank you, Tony, for making a difficult time much easier to cope with!
