After originally trying one product, I now own Pyke's lineup -- can't say enough about it.
Wingman Vest: Don't be fooled by its lightweight and slim design. This pack can cover a full day loadout no problem. I've done a few full day hunts with two dogs and was never short on supplies or water. Not known from the pics, the back zipper pocket actually opens all the way up the back of the vest...so you have a pocket running the full back panel of the vest. This keeps the weight up against your back where it belongs. Also, the water bottle holder is really a great system. Allows you to customize the size and type of bottle you need. Short trips--pack a basic bottle and don't add weight or bulk. Full day hunt--use a large nalgene etc. Lastly, the seams and quality is top notch. From the bombproof thin straps to the finished seams. Also - the zippers feel great quality and are easy yo manipulate with one hand while working with gloves.
Tongass System -- been wearing the tongass as my main outer layer for every hunt this year (20-25 jaunts). I think there's maybe 2 places that got "picked" from nasty thorns...and those were multifloral nasty thorn bushes. Point being if it's a thorn that is going to shred this shirt...you shouldn't be walking through it in the first place. All in all offers great protection, but also is very good at wind and water resistance. Shirt is cut with shooter arms in mind and is unrestrictive when having to quickly bring the gun up
Kiowa System -- Being our season starts with cold weather...I have yet to wear this as an outer...so can't speak to its durability yet. What I have been doing is using it as a mid-layer under the tongass on very cold days. What i've noticed is that it breathes incredibly well.. It does have nylong protection in the vulnerable thorn areas, so I'm not expecting any issues on that front when the weather gets warmer. All in all, there aren't many products on the market that are built for warm weather hunting that offer the level of protection from the Kiowa.
Hope this helps anyone on the fence or who wants more info on the product -- I know it's still new to the market. Nonetheless, it's a premium product. The vest is on par with other newer MOLLE systems, and while the pants/shirts are slightly more than other premium competitors (Orvis, Firstlite), I do believe it's more tailored to the active upland hunter and will perform longer. There's regularly sales and discounts for those that want to buy the whole system (they were just running a deal where you buy the vest and get a...
Read moreI purchased a pair of Dakota pants on sale in Spring 2023 and waited until I wore them for a season before I posted a review. So far, I am pleased with the purchase. The pants are lightweight and comfortable. They stretch and are good for walking on rough and uneven terrain. The nylon facing material extends higher than usual and does a good job of protecting your upper thighs. It has proven to be durable (still looks new). Unfortunately, the heavy briars where we hunt rabbits were not as kind to the stitching that frayed and pulled (see photos). Hopefully, this will not affect the durability of the pants. I also wish that the cuffs were just slightly wider so I could wear my Alpha Burly boots. UPDATE: Less than 2 hours after I posted my review, I received an email from company president Brent Pike. He explained the cause of the stitching problem and told me to return the pants for a new pair. What amazing customer service (and on a Sunday afternoon)! Thank you Pyke Gear!!! UPDATE #2: Wore the replacement pants through the same briar and thorn choked cover as last season (actually more this year) and the PANTS LOOK GREAT! Could almost pass for new if it wasn’t for the mud and dog hair. Thank you...
Read moreThe Wingman is WONDEFUL! I've purchase a ton of outdoors products for the past 45 years and have too many "latest and greatest" things that were often good but nothing like this Wingman vest. It's great. It's off the charts comfortable. I can forget about it and just hunt. The straps stay in place on my shoulders and the belt not only carries the weight but keeps the center of gravity high on my body. My foldable dog water bowl and extra dog water STAYS in the bag when I fall. My "emergency" pouch (headlamp, chapstick and TP) also stay in the bag and I can still put three pheasants in it as well. It's just plain easy to hunt with this vest. I had a really tough time laying out the cash (cause I'm Dutch) but it was worth every penny. Thanks Pyke for great gear. Best vest ever. I've had many over the years. My other Pyke gear is great as well but I can't find the words to really say how much I...
