I wad told to remove my review the first time but after paying $2,000+ in class fees, my experience deserves to be known. From January to May 2025, I was in Lisa brewers English 101& 101E course in order to obtain credits to further my career in criminal justice- That entire five months was spent listening to the professor ramble on about politics, life problems, etc. A big portion of the class dropped out within the first few weeks due to this disruption towards our education. Not everyone in the class had the choice to drop out, like me. My benefits make it to where I must complete each class so that was sadly not an option for me in this uncomfortable situation of a semester. Keep in mind this class was filled with students of all ages, raging from 16 years old to 21+ years old. (I just so happened to sit beside the 16 year old in this class daily). One day in class we were watching a YouTube video based on our course content when this said 16 year old was on their cellular device during the video lesson and it caught the attention of Lisa brewer. Rather than the professional in the situation requesting that the student puts their phone away, Lisa brewer then decides attempt to intimate this child and got down in this students face and choose to berate her in front of the entire class, saying “these are your class fees going to waste and you will fail this class”. All while pointing her finger in the students face. 😳That same exact student passed that class just fine and Lisa brewer was able to get away with this power trip. It’s funny because a majority of the class DID fail this semester due to the amount of distractions Lisa brewer brought into her English classroom setting. From political debates in spaces where students clearly feel uncomfortable engaging in political conversation, to getting into paying student’s personal space. This is intolerable behavior. I even have a 30+ minute audio recording of her arguing back and forth with myself and 3 other students in the computer lab during the 101E portion of the class. That lecture ended with all of us walking out due to the professor antagonizing us to argue away class time we pay for. Nothing was done about this and Lisa brewer remains immune from accountability for her actions. No paying student should have to feel panic and worry within their own classroom setting. ALL students should be made to feel nothing but welcome. If the tables were turned and I were to get in anybody’s face, like the professor did to a minor child- I would be held accountable by law. Very sad and disappointing situation. Due to the distress this last semester has brought among myself along with lack of advocacy from faculty administrators, I have now transferred to a completely different institution where I am now guaranteed to work towards my career without any unnecessary distractions like this one. Hopefully this review can help those out who are unsure of this college. Make the right choice and let new river not be a first resort! I have already spoke to everyone I need to about this situation and nothing came about it so here is my review! I sure can’t tell you anything about what I should have learned in English 101&101E but I can write you a 4 page front and back essay on Lisa brewers political standpoint in the world. As a second generation student at new river,- that tradition sadly comes to an end with me. For as long as this professor has been at this institution, this is shocking to me. This couldn’t have been an ongoing issue the past 22 years. Absolutely unethical. I have never seen a classroom of students fail so miserably due to a terrible instructor like this one, but yes let this woman carry on with her lack of professionalism, I ain’t the first to leave a report and I sure won’t be the last! Beware of this institution!

Place doesn't really care about you. After withdrawing from a class before the first half was over (I find paying to learn that not being comfortable around people not of your own "race" is fine to be a laughable purchase and an issue to teach in behavioral and mental health on an objective standing, let alone ethical) I found I was still in the hole for the entirety of it. Upset, I withdrew from the next semester online. Evidently this didn't go through and when caught I requested aid, receiving only the equivalent of an internet search for "how 2 pay det". No nudge towards a means to pay off this new debt, let alone an actual fix. Take a few more minutes extra to go to a place with proper student care. Especially if you're neurodivergent, you probably don't want to be pushed into paying for a public speech class if you can't express more than simple phrases without issue like I've seen here.

EDIT: Two months without a reply. Oddly, got a reply within a day when it was a "simple" review. The responses they give here honestly speak of the level of competence you should expect more than any review,...
