Surry Marketplace — Local services in Surry

Edit: I've been shopping here a few times since I first posted and it has come a long way! There is a little bit of everything and the prices are decent and affordable. Meat prices are comparable to local butchers and are of good quality. Produce is fresh and affordable, but could use some additions such as more fruits. The dairy section has grown with various cheeses and yogurts. You may not find your favorite brand here, but you will find what you need. This is recommended for local shoppers for all their necessities.

Came from Smithfield to check out the new marketplace and support a local business. What's good: the meat was plentiful with ample supply and inexpensive; lots of options that other local butchers don't provide. The produce was inexpensive and decent quality. What's not so good: the entire store felt empty walking in. Shelves were barely stocked with essentials and not stocked at all in many areas, such as the dairy section. Butter, cheeses, and yogurts were either nearly gone or not stocked at all, with bare shelves. There were some varied options for milk though, with different styles of cream available which was nice to see. Vegetables were in good supply but options were limited to common veggies such as potatoes, onions, peppers, etc., overall a good choice for most people, but fresh fruits were in short supply with some grapes and oranges sold. In the aisles, baking supplies had the essentials such as flour, sugar, leaveners and oils and the bread had just been stocked with good choices available. Cereals had few options and were mostly sold out. Canned veggies and soups were in limited supply. Deli items such as sandwich meats were not offered. Baby care items were not offered (maybe I missed them?) There were some locally produced items, but not many. Overall, it's a decent place for locals that need some quick menu items, but will not replace their weekly trips to larger supermarkets. Neighboring counties will not find a trip here worth the drive and are better off with their own local supermarkets. I am hopeful that the market can grow and expand their selection, even offer more locally produced goods. If they aren't going to become a full-blown supermarket then it would be nice to see something more like a farmer's market. Hopefully I caught the store on bad day, maybe the supply trucks hadn't come yet. I'll check it out again in a week or so and see if...

Hear ye, hear ye, noble folk and gentle travelers, for I must lay forth my grievous tale of woe regarding mine experience at the marketplace of Surry, in the fair land of Virginia. Lo, I hath traveled from the distant and prosperous kingdom of Texas, in search of simple provisions, only to be met with unseemly deeds.

Verily, the establishment, which ought to be a place of commerce and goodwill, hath been sullied by the presence of the manager's husband. This man, a most disagreeable creature, doth engage in acts most unseemly, casting an air of discomfort and ill repute upon the humble marketplace. His manner is one of vulgarity, and his behavior, most unprofessional, doth chill the very hearts of those who seek merely to purchase their sustenance.

The marketplace, though it be fair in its offerings, is forever tarnished by this foul presence, and I, a traveler from afar, cannot but bewail the sorry state of affairs. It is an insult to both patron and merchant that such conduct should be allowed to persist. Pray, I beseech thee, may the powers that be take heed and restore honor to this humble establishment, that it might once again be a place fit for decent folk and courteous exchange.

Its been well over 30 years since we've had a grocery Market. Fresh foods, freshly cut (butchered) meats; affordable prices, supplies/items; high tech, quality amenities, spacious, clean, just a beautiful transformation from a hardware/furniture store to a market. Even, 2-stalled (blue) M & (gold) W restrooms. 😃 Outstanding!!! My grandsons, my son, and I met the famous Andrew White III 🏀; the opening team; and the county's supporters; Mrs. Michelle and her family; and of course, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew White Jr. GOD has Multipled in Surry!
