Pretty cool hike with a neat rock formation at the end, as well as some cool geology along the way. The hike is definitely rocky on the steep parts but by no means for the entire time. I would definitely suggest a good pair of hiking boots or shoes and not just trying to do it in regular walking shoes. Everything is well marked and well maintained and generally a good experience. Has the signs will tell you, do be on the lookout for rattlesnakes at Wolf Rock. We went on a warm July afternoon so most of them are hiding under the rocks, but we did see this one guy hanging out right where everyone walked. He didn't care about any of us walking within a couple of feet however definitely watch your kids and where you stick your hands climbing over the rocks. I definitely wouldn't bring a dog or go poking around under the rocks.

Nice little quartzite rock formation in the midst of Cacoctin Mountain Park. It's not a long climb but a bit tricky as climbing up the zig-zag rocks is like a jigsaw puzzle. Be careful as there are deep crevices. But it is beautiful up there. It's so worth the climb. Take time to relax there before proceeding. You can do a loop covering chimney rock formation and back to the visitor's center. Don't miss visiting this section when you are in Cacoctin Mountain Park next time.

Great hike in Catoctin Mountain Park near Thurmont MD. Started at parking area on main road (caution, very limited parking there). About 2.5 miles round trip. First .4 mile is all uphill. Flat for a little while, then downhill to rock. Rock is cool. Lots of crevasses (be careful with kids). Trail well marked. Keeps going to chimney rock. Really great hike if you only have an hour or so.
