The Reading Blue Mountain and Northern is a 2nd class railroad with interchanges with NS in Reading pa and CSX up in Mahoopany pa. The railroad owns and operates about 400 or so miles of track that go north from reading to mahoopany, and west from port clinton to just outside Harrisburg. In addition to freight operations, they also run daily passenger trains through the Lehigh valley gorge. They also run daily trips from the newly created reading outer station in north reading to Jim Thorpe pa using their 2 RDCs. In port clinton they have a decently big train station that doubles as their cooperate offices. The station was made to resemble the famous reading outer station; built in 1864, which was located in down town Reading Pa. The original reading outer station was famous for being of of only a few triangular shaped train stations. The original station was decommissioned in the late 60s and sadly burned down in the late 70s. Also located in Port Clinton is the railroads deisal engine shops, and 3 stall roundhouse. That's right, the Reading Northern runs steam as well. Currently they operate a 4-6-2 light Pacific, number 425. They are in the process of restoring ex Reading T-1 number 2102; a giant 4-8-4. The line is also frequented by CNJ 0-6-0 number 113 which is one of only 2 surviving steamers from the CNJ and is the only operating CNJ steamer. Hope this...
Read moreTook a train with family today to Pottsville. We were late by 20 minutes due to an unexpected issue. The lead engine pushed a tree branch and it grazed the side of the truck and knocked something with the brake so the train stopped for inspection as an alarm was tripped. Safety always is their motto painted on the steps of their locomotives and we appreciate it being heeded. We ended up being pushed by the rear engine. As we pulled into Union Station, a Reading Northern mechanic truck pulled in to service the engine It's great RNRR offers passenger and does a great job. Second time after a Jim Thorpe trip a few years ago and will do again. Shout out to Conductor John for his friendly demeanor and dropping knowledge. Pottsville was great welcoming. We visited Jerry's Classic Car museum - awesome, Black Rock Brewing - also awesome. Last, we toured the Yuengling plant,...
Read moreThis review is regarding my experience at RBMN's Port Clinton Yard, not my experience riding one of their excursion services.
I visited the Port Clinton Yard on August 24th, 2018. The staff were very friendly, and allowed me to walk around the yard (with a pass, but you can easily acquire one from the main office.) The yard was busy that day, with a few locomotives sitting around, as well as a SD40-2 switiching cars around the yard. I was able to get some great roster shots, as well as a few action shots. I hope to...
