Our store has been ordering produce from Carioto for three years. The quality is usually great. We have NEVER returned a single item. Last week, we received a case of blueberries covered in white mold with a few half-filled containers. Per Carioto's request, we saved the product in our fridge so a driver could pick it back up. I also documented the order with photos the day we received it. When the driver brought the case back to their warehouse, I received an email stating that "this case has been put together." I spoke on the phone with Anthony Carioto, who flat-out accused me of lying about the return. He stated that we must have either purchased product elsewhere or held on to old containers so we could put them all together to try to scam Carioto for credit. Our first return in 3 years, amounting to $30, and this was the owner's response. I have never been treated so disrespectfully by any vendor, especially one with whom I thought we had a good relationship. We spent about 30 minutes on the phone arguing over $30 in moldy fruit. The entire time, Anthony persisted in his accusations. He was rude, unprofessional, and condescending. He told me that they had plenty of other business anyway. I hope so, because accusing a small business of lying about the moldy fruit Carioto delivered was a good way to lose a customer (and our thousands of dollars a year in orders) for good.
