As part of a week-long summer visit with a young NYC girl, who I hosted through the Fresh Air Fund program, I signed us up for a single session of ceramics at Nonneta and Friends. Nonna was great in every way – scheduling, welcoming us, showing us the studio, having everything ready for our session, and being receptive to my visitor’s interest in making something that apparently was beyond an intro level piece – a heart shaped mug! I’ve taken a few stand-alone ceramics classes before, but I surely learned new techniques from Nonna, including transferring patterns onto the clay and blending the different components together. We had to wait a few weeks for the mugs to be fired, but when I delivered them to our new friend, she said she didn’t like them – she LOVED them. We learned so much about different techniques - some of which we used on our own pieces, others which she used in pieces she has around the studio. Not only is she an experienced, talented artist, but she passes her enthusiasm and wisdom onto others.
