(EDIT 09/13/2018)
This will be my first year in this school, therefore this review will be edited as my time in Suffolk goes on. If you want to know how my placement/registration process went then keep reading.
For me, the staff was always helpful. For the majority of the registration process it will be in the cammuset hall building. There are signs everywhere to know where to go but i did ask a few times where certain places were and staff was nice enough to point me into the right direction.
I needed accommodations for my placement tests and they were very helpful in providing me in what forms I needed and quickly gave me a date. The accommodations where exactly what I wanted and the staff was very kind through it all.
After that, I saw a counselor. I will admit this was the only issue I had. I did have an appointment to go over my placement tests and classes but ended up waiting 3 hours. Yet, I can't hold it against them because their staff was small and there were many people doing the same. If you have no patience, then this won't be the place for you. The people at the desk were nice even when it was busy.
I finally got my named called and my counselor Brian was very nice and easy going. He really got me into the classes I wanted and even gave me some advice about doing a math lab class only for half semester and then I can easily change it. He was overall very nice and helpful.
After that you have to go upstairs and register. The girls behind the desk were incredibly nice and explained to me what the math class would be like since it was a lab. After I confirmed my full time evening classes i was sent to the cashier that was next to the registration area and paid my tuition (through financial aid)
I am all set for school this 2018 fall semester and I really can't complain about the staff or people. People need to remember that not everyone will have your standards of "politeness". They have to help alot of students and sometimes can seem stern, but you will have to deal with that in life regardless. (Of course if you are being humiliated or discriminated that is something to be taken to the board and take action immediately.)
As for now I am content. But will update when the semester starts and how my teachers are.
Edit:
So I am two weeks into the fall semester and I can't complain. It's a community college and that's what it is.
My professors - some are against any type of tech and other are all for digital studies, so be mindful of that and read the syllabus.
ASK QUESTIONS! If you don't understand - ask. If not, ask a classmate.
Walking building to building is alright, although for evening classes be careful and report anything weird or off. Get to you building or car fast.
The only issue I've come to have is with the bookstore. They know that we need books yet they always want to delay things when we are on a deadline. The should know better that this is college and have an idea that people need their books and access codes.
As for everything else, I've had a good experience in this campus and feel safe in every class (I have panic disorder) and i made it clear to each professor and they were completely understandable - even the most stubborn one.
Edit: (12/13/2018)
I have successfully finished my first semester and all I can say is that it was a great one.
I can't wait for spring...
Read moreThis school isn't the best, but it isn't the worst either. Unfortunately, there is more bad than good and that is starting to increase as the years go by.
Like the following: They send out too many reminders whether it be by email, phone calls and text messages. They really over do it! Especially during the midterm of the semester and priority registration.
Regarding the staff, most of the professors are good. They teach well, are nice, funny and easy going. Some unfortunately act like high school teachers as opposed to professors. And when they enter the classroom, they don't even say hello. I find that rude and unprofessional. Most of the other staff (counselors, cashier, etc) whether in person or on the phone come across as lazy and don't want to help. This school encourages students to seek help or speak to a staff employee about this or that and when you do, the staff looks like they don't want to be bothered. Some are not very informative and give inaccurate information.
Most of the staff act like they don't know you. Whether it be a counselor or someone who lead a workshop/seminar. The next time they see you, they will act like they don't even know you. They wont say hello or even smile. They act rude and weird.
This school treats students like kids. They are very restrictive. You almost feel like you are attending a high school and not a college. For example, you have to sign in and out using your ID to use the computer lab. Once you sign in with your ID, you have to select from a number of options. For example, if you going to be using the web for school work or something else. You even have to use your ID to get tutoring and oh by the way, tutoring is ONLY 30 mins! That's not enough time to be tutored! Especially if you are a student that is weak in that particular subject!
Additionally, the computer lab in the Nesconset building, ONLY allows you to print out five pages! How can a COLLEGE student print out ONLY 5 pages?! We are in college! Regarding eating in classrooms, some classrooms actually have signs, yes actually have signs, that say you cannot eat in the classroom. How childish is that ?!!! This isn't elementary or middle school! We are in college, work VERY hard and are going to be VERY stressed out at times. We should be able to eat WHEREVER and WHENEVER we want. So college is supposed to be for adults huh? Yea, no. Not at this college. For a place that is supposed to be a "college" it sure doesn't feel that way at times.
Regarding food supplies, in the food court areas (specifically the pick up and go sections) they always seem to run out of food. Which shouldn't be the case being that there are thousands of students who attend college, spend all day there and will...
Read moreIn my opinion this college is amazing I can't speak for everyone but my experience has been amazing. When I first was looking at college's it was difficult cause there was just so many options out there. I decided to stay home instead of going away right away so I started doing research and my parents told me go where you want to go and I told them I wanted to go to Suffolk cause I read such great things about this college. I've never had any complaints about it. I've had such great professors throughout my semesters here. I'm here because I am working on getting my Education degree. The Early Childhood Education Program here at Suffolk is amazing you get so many opportunities with this program. I have found a professor who I really click with and this is my third time having professor K and she is wonderful she's helped me with some of my other classes and her office hours have been such a great help. I feel everyone should come to Suffolk cause this is a great school and there are so many opportunities for their students for them to really get out there and enjoy...
