Here is the thing: I would give it a 4-star rating, but I am absolutely in awe of these waterfalls and the geological history underpinning their creation. These gems have been created through catastrophic forces of nature, yet they can be a place of perfect serenity. I think the more you invest in understanding how the beauty before you was created, the deeper you are drawn into nature and the present moment. As I said, I am biased toward our Schuyler County waterfalls. If you plan on going to Decker Town Falls for water recreation, you may be disappointed, but if you want a place to immerse yourself in nature and do a little hiking, it is a gem. Be cautious and wear hiking shoes. Please don't underestimate the trail's difficulty because there are cliffs where you can fall. The thing to avoid is walking the trail that goes to the upper falls because there are a lot of trees blown into the gorge and leaning overhead, waiting for a reason to fall. The banks are also very unstable at this time. If you enter this area, you could be struck by a falling tree or trapped under a major rock slide. The Watkins Glen State Park Gorge is annually maintained through a process by which the park scours the banks for potential rock/land slides and then triggers them to eliminate a potentially fatal accident. Yet, this year, for the first time I can remember, there was a landslide at the Watkins Glen State Park George trail. There were no significant injuries, but the hikers were trapped for some time and required rescue. It could have been very tragic. Deckertown Falls is all natural and unmaintained. Its natural state is what makes it such a great place, but it's also what makes it a dangerous place. Visit the lower falls, but please avoid the upper falls in the foreseeable future. Sorry, there are no photos yet. I'm always distracted from my phone when I'm...
Read moreWelcome, one and all, to the world largest collection of No Trespassing signs! I am not joking, we stopped counting at 20 signs. I thought it was funny to take pictures of them all, but got bored at 20. Falls were okay. Nature is something we often find a lot of beauty in, but this park was surrounded by those unfriendly signs. The parking lot was really just a dead end road. The hiking path is more like a slightly worn deer trail, with poor views of the falls. The end has a narrow and slick ledge that leads to a slightly better view. If you fancy a short hike just for the hike, sure. I wouldn't spend my time here with so many other fantastic parks and falls. Sorry about how so few pictures there are, the new update makes it challenging to...
Read moreYou hear the falls from the parking lot. The parking is at the end of a short dead-end street. At first I thought Google maps steered me wrong, but nope. I didn't see any signs for the falls.
The trail is not a professional one, especially near the cascade. Going down to the bottom is a bit harrowing on the shippery shale and mud. For how special this place is you'd think some effort would be put into it.
Near the beginning of the trail is a trail to the left. I missed it going in but saw someone using it on the way out. Great photos from there!
There is also a trail to the right that goes up the hill. I went up partway but didn't notice any improvement in the view.
Lovely cascades...
