I was taken there on my birthday in 1989. Just turned 15 the day I arrived. I was a very troubled child and got myself into trouble all the time to be put there. I was in unit 2 with some good staff and some not so good. 2 of the staff took me under their wing and helped me to transform into the person I am today. I have stayed out of trouble for a long time now thanks to them. They changed my life for the best. I wish I could find the 2 men who did so much for me to thank them. John Hoffman and Tyler cerro. Not sure I got the last name of Tyler right though. I would love to see them again. Thank you very much for changing my life for the better and saving me from myself and the troubled life I lived. Just read another review and it reminded me of another staff member that I liked. Don't remember his last name though. His name was Stosh. Probably not...

One star is being generous. I was there in 1980 and it was horrible! The staff took any opportunity they could to discipline and it was always quick, no warnings, no discussion, little to no explication. I sat in the corner for an hour for using the wrong cleaning product for my chores. A staff put me in a headlock for no reason, I guess to assert her dominance. I was confined to my room once, and the only explanation, “You know why!” I found out the next morning it was because I was wiggling my hips too much dancing to some music. It was just more of the same nonsense that I was going through at home. Narcissistic control freakery! I was suffering from CPTSD from severe abuse from my family and this heck-hole just made it worse. I hope things have changed...

I was there from 1966-1972. Along with Frank Santos who has shared a review also. I had a great experience here. Although we were disciplined, and had structure, we had great opportunities to go many places such as Washington, DC, NYC, rodeos, and many other activities every summer. It helped shape me, and my world view. I miss and love the staff who nurtured me. The Tafts (little boys cottage when I was 11, 12), the Carras (Big boys cottage @13), the Burgers (13-17), also summer staff who were University students @ Univ. Of Alabama (Mr. Belanger, and Mr. Owens). Thank you all for being a major part of ME! I will go back 8/24/2018 To visit...46 years later! The thought of it brings tears to my eyes!
