Shur-save — Local services in Town of Ulysses

This is a good small- to medium-sized grocery. They have all the basics, so you can save a trip to Ithaca if you discover you are out of something.

Produce is basic, and prices are a little high across the board but not outrageously so. You're paying for the delivery truck going out of its way and for the convenience of having a good grocery store nearby (for the T-burg, Interlaken, Hector, Mecklenburg, Enfield folks, that is.)

The area where this store especially excels is in the meat department. They have one of the best (if not THE BEST) in the Ithaca area for basic cuts of beef, chicken, and pork. Also have excellent sausage made in-house.

Again, not the place to go for exotic stuff or fresh seafood (not bad, just not their thing), but if you want a basic cut or roast, it might be worth it to travel -- especially when they have sales, like chicken for $0.98/lb.

We have been regular loyal customers of this store for 12 years. My wife purchased about $100 of various items this morning; got home and realized she had purchase the wrong type of detergent for our washing machine. She went back an hour later to exchange the detergent for the correct one and pick up the pizza she had ordered. She did not bring the receipt because it was an exchange and she was just there. They proceeded to accuse my wife of attempting to steal the detergent! My wife was shocked and appalled and sought out the manager who defended his staff and refused to apologize or complete the exchange. They acknowledged that they saw my wife buy things earlier but said that they did not know if the detergent was among the purchases. I presume they have video cameras at their entrance and could have verified that my wife entered the store with the detergent but found it easier to falsely accuse her of thievery. This is poor customer service at its worst and we will no longer do...

I shop here alot. Staff is nice. The fruit stayed super moldy for atleast a month once because they don't replace it regularly on time. It's a small place with a good selection of food and some basic hygiene products. The deli has amazing food. Keep in mind their hours are different from the stores. Edit: they replace the expiration date on their meat with a new one. They had alot of packages that didn't sell before they all expired so they decided to do this. This is horrible. I ended up in the hospital with the doctors not having a clue what caused it. They guessed it was something I ate. If the package has a sticker on it that says "managers special" DO NOT EAT. Specifically it was the ground turkey meat. It almost always has a spoiled smell to it. Even if I open it the day I buy it. What I had to go through because of their attempts to save money and sell spoiled meat was horrible. Worst pain of my life. Worst bill from the hospital I've ever seen. STOP DOING THIS...
