I wish I could give this even less than a "poor - fair". Absolutely a shining example of the disgraceful state of education in America. I already have an associate degree on top of being at Troy for almost two years now and I am STILL a freshman because class availability is so non-existent that I can't move ahead in my studies because I can't get into necessary prerequisite courses. This recent semester, as a psychology major, there was only ONE course I could take that didn't require the prerequisite courses I can't get in and I get to register earlier than anyone else being in the "adaptive needs" programme. By noon on that day, it already was full. I ended up taking only two courses this semester, neither of which has anything to do with my major and is eating up valuable tuition money. Half of the tenured professors here shouldn't even be qualified to teach grade school. Imagine getting a paper back and you look through and count a total of -17 points then get an UNSCALLED grade of 4/15. WHAT!? Any professor actually worth a damn there is hosed constantly by administration. Massive egregious waste of money everywhere. They banned smoking on campus while trying to approve selling alcohol at sporting events! The tobacco ban is stupid too, they only did it to try and appear to be a private institution so they can justify charging such a grossly higher amount in tuition than any other public institution in the state of Alabama. There is absolutely no sense of logistics to be found anywhere around here either, the parking lots are designed in a way that makes it impossible to exit them because you can't see anyone coming, or requiring that you drive back out into the main roads just to go to the next lane of parking. While we're on that subject, be sure that you carry cash on you for anything you may need to do as well as any and all forms of identification and the kitchen sink because they're really bad about waiting until the last minute to announce when to do necessary administrative crap like buying your parking decal and then not putting up a sign to tell you where it is or to tell you it's cash only. Take a cattle catcher with you too if you go to the book store, it'll be the only way to move around as the staff likes to stand in the middle of the isles, in the way all the time. I know for a FACT that the chancellor "Dr." Hawkins (who only has an honorary doctorate) gave a student an award for something the student didn't do just so that he could get his face and name in the paper. There's a mansion on the campus for the chancellor that he never uses, yet they spend $300 bi-weekly on it for flowers and have maids clean it almost daily. Want to do art? Bring sandbags and emergency supplies, because Malone Hall (the art building) is continually flooded because the school won't do anything about it, though they keep saying they are. The bare minimum would be to have somebody go with a shovel to clear the drain and even that has not been done. I also read somewhere that the average annual salary here was over $101,000... if you consider the fact that at LEAST 90% of the staff makes far less than even $60,000 then who the hell is making SO much money that it increases the average that much (considering it is true). 0 class availability very poor teaching staff the good professors get screwed constantly so much...
Read moreThis school did not live up to its name. Most people give it 5 stars because the campus is beautiful. Big on sports and clubs, not education, only on money. They wait to the last minute to tell you financials and make you take out loans for classes and they have obligatory added fees.
No flexibility for transfer students, not willing to give me extra time to finish tests unless I have certified disability. Insane for such a big institution that says they are welcoming to all students from other places. No flexibility in which courses I could take for my major considering I need to meet certain pre-requisites for grad school, did not let me change majors so I could meet these. When I registered classes I actually needed for grad school they said I would need to pay out of pocket despite being on military scholarship.
Financial department was not helpful as they do not know until the last minute of your financials and push you to take loans. Disappointed that the financial aid department which should be able to tell you FINANCIALS was not able to. I also felt there was a miscommunication because if I had an issue I could not address it directly because it had to be passed down through various people to be able to help me. Considering how expensive this college is and how far I drove in order to meet for my classes I did not find it rewarding.
My BIGGEST issue at troy was that the scheduling needs to be revised. Shorter classes more days a week should not be done for concentration courses but rather longer times and maybe 2-3 days to be able to FINISH testing and succeed in courses, my professors half of the time had to stop the class due to time and tell the whole class to look it up online which is an awful way to teach. In my case that I live so far I would of much rather driven less days a week but stayed to cover FULLY the material and succeed in courses. This forced me to change to another university and change my major. Hoped to graduate from here,...
Read moreMy experience with the place I thought was going to be great! The school is beautiful this was a perfect fit for my son but I was sadly mistaken. My son was going for music major, which my son really loves. He admired the music teacher as well. I was also warned TO NOT LET MY SON ATTEND THIS SCHOOL. The reason being that they will let your kid come to this school and go for the semester and tell you at the end of the semester that the kids financial aid didn't go through! When we spoke to someone in the financial aid department by the name of Mr. Johnson. It was told to me that they email me something from financial aid to sign and verify but NEVER received it. Then Mr. Johnson changed his story and said that it went to my son's email which I had total access to and it again NEVER came. I had a nice lady that took me to the head of financial aid to see if anything could be done but I was told. I CAN'T HELP YOU AND I HAVE BEEN BREAKING HEARTS ALL DAY LONG. This unset my son so bad when we left he was so sad because this is all he wanted to do. Now my son can't go back to school until he pays a 14,000 dollar tuition off. This is not the only story that I have heard. A lot of kids from Georgia have been treated this way and all of the kids know each other and have the same story. So if you're from Georgia go to another school. Not sure if it is for quota or money but this has hurt a lot of kids that just wanted to earn...
