The Tucson Chinese Cultural Center presents itself as a hub for preserving and promoting Chinese culture. However, my recent experience left me questioning its commitment to this mission. I visited with the specific intention of inquiring about Chinese language classes. While waiting, a white gentleman entered and began speaking fluent Mandarin. The staff at the front desk, to my surprise, seemed flustered and apologetic, admitting they didn't speak Mandarin themselves. This interaction struck me as deeply incongruous. How can a 'cultural center' dedicated to Chinese heritage lack Mandarin proficiency among its staff? It raises concerns about the center's ability to effectively preserve and transmit the language, a fundamental aspect of Chinese culture. If the staff tasked with representing the center cannot communicate in Mandarin, what message does that send to the community? While I understand that cultural centers may have diverse focuses, including art, history, and community events, the inability to converse in the primary language of the culture it represents seems like a significant oversight. I left feeling disappointed and skeptical about the center's ability to truly fulfill its stated purpose. SAFETY ISSUE
We went for the new year's festival.... insufficient parking and in some make shift parking spots the grounds arec unpaved and uneven - safety hazards. Oh well. We didn't bother to park n left. Disappointing. We went on their FB and commented on this issue but nobody replied.
