I normally wouldn't leave a review under 4 stars but this was place was something special for me (I am 27, from NJ) as I was originally unable to visit it with my first trip to Vermont in 2021. For all intents and purposes it is a wonderful shop and the new owners have made an effort to make it a genuine established business with the new building. Even better you can view the bakers making the pies. It's quaint and homely while also modern, things needed in the current financial environment. Prices weren't absurd, but it doesn't affect how I feel about the experience. I'm starting with the good as there's alot to be proud of.

The peach and blueberry pie was to die for. It had the right contents and it was bursting with fruit and preserves. The Jameson Mint Cream Pie was also a hit at the party I bought it to, only flaw being alittle tiny once it was out of the box. Honestly people don't need large pies, a treat and not a meal.

However, the 3 stars are due to the chicken pot pie. I had kept the mint pie for myself for the party and brought the peach and blueberry, a loaf of soda bread and the pot pie for my folks. I drove 7 hours to make sure the pies remained fresh on the way home. They told me there was barely any chicken inside and admittedly my family complains so I didn't believe them immediately. Ultimately I found myself agreeing with them. The pie was more a hand-cut high quality vegetable medley pie. I can only guess there was maybe a half a chicken breast inside the whole pie.

I 100% recommend their soda bread and fruit pies. Solid value for the quality but as of their chicken pot pie I'd try something else if I had the choice. I felt for $25 I'd expect atleast a whole breast. I will note prices for food in Vermont are extremely high, so my review...

We stopped at Poorhouse Pies and were so glad we did! We started with three egg, bacon, and cheese hand pies that were very good; flaky, flavorful, and filling. Even my super particular kiddo enjoyed them. They were maybe just a touch too spicy for the littles, but overall we were pleasantly surprised.

Next came the donuts, and wow! My husband, who never likes apple fritters, loved theirs. It was perfectly sweetened with cinnamon, and there were chunks of apple throughout the dough. Very different from the typical fritter, but in the best way. The cake donut with sprinkles was crunchier than what my child usually prefers, so it wasn’t their favorite, but my husband and I both found ourselves really liking it. The Boston cream donut was also a hit; the dough was light, and once you got to the filling, it was nicely balanced in sweetness without being over the top.

The line was wrapped around the driveway and down the road with everyone waiting for their donuts, but we were glad it was worth the wait. That said, I would personally recommend changing how the donuts are displayed. Having them all out in the open makes it easy for people to talk over them, which isn’t very sanitary. A tall wheeled rack or enclosed display would save space and keep them fresher and cleaner.

We also picked up a pulled pork mac n’ cheese pie to enjoy later this week, and we’re already excited to dig in.

Overall, Poorhouse Pies delivered delicious pies and donuts with a unique twist, and we’ll...

I don’t even like pie that much, but I would literally eat Poorhouse Pies every day if I could - it’s THAT good. This place is a hidden gem!!! You drive past it and it looks like a little shack on the side of the road, but that’s the beauty of Vermont: these little places always have the best food imaginable! If you’ve been contemplating coming into this shop, stop debating - just do it! You will love it!!

Both sweet and savory, glutinous and gluten-free, they have something for everyone. From peach to cherry to chicken pot pie, there is bound to be a flavor you’ll enjoy. However, this is a small shop and they don’t make hundreds of pies every day - they only make a certain number, and once they’re out, that’s it for the day! So GET HERE EARLY if you want the full selection, especially if you want gluten-free pie! There are obviously less gluten-free pies available so they might sell out even sooner.

This place is ABSOLUTELY a must-visit if you happen to be driving through Underhill. Maybe you’re visiting Smugglers’ Notch, maybe you’re heading down to Stowe - regardless, even if you’re not passing through, this place is worth the drive. Head out to Poorhouse Pies and try some amazing...
