After a house fire, I sought boarding for my six birds at Varietees. I'd never boarded any animals before (with a horse, three dogs, two ducks and six companion birds, it was always easier to get a house sitter) so I had no idea what to expect. From the moment the birds were settled in, the whole Varietees' team went out of their way to make it like a home away from home. They helped me outfit the boarding cages with ropes, toys and sleep tents, let me come in before regular store hours, or on Sundays, when they were there caring all the resident and visiting birds, allowed me the use of a tree in the play area for my gang to get "out of cage" time during my visits, helped me modify wing clips to address the reality that it was going to be months before my flock returned to the flight safe bird room at home and introduced me to other store regulars and Gateway Parrot Club members to help me find folks who had similar experiences. The shop is extensive and well designed to allow exploration even with a parrot or two hanging off of the browser, and, for those of us with different abilities, it is wonderfully barrier free! The extended stay allowed me to witness excellent customer service to many shoppers and browsers, knowledgeable and honest guidance (even at the cost of a sale to someone contemplating an "impulse buy" of a bird for a girlfriend) and the gentle but expert handling of birds visiting for grooming. We are lucky to have such a store with its caring team...
Read moreVarieties Bird Shop is hands down the best bird shop, breeder, groomer, boarder, bird experience in the St. Louis area. I have been visiting them for 11 years and recommend them to anyone who will listen.
They are first and foremost, very knowledgeable. They are kind, polite, and always have the best interest of their and other people's birds at their core. They hand raise beautiful loving birds. They sell absolutely everything you could need for your birds and plenty of wild bird items as well. They have a beautiful nursery and large open air play are for their personal and available birds.
The staff and owners are heads above "pet store" staff. They have no problem telling people if a bird they have chosen is not a good fit for their home. They carefully vette those who purchase birds from them, and do their best to never forget a bird and owner. My yellow sided green cheek conure was hatched there March 23rd 2008. I chose her before she was weaned. I was able to visit her and bond with her as often as I wanted as she grew. They remember her and me to this day and always have a smile for us.
As a side note, they have the best prices in town as well. They have hand made toys, and even an area to make your own bird toys. Even if you don't own a bird, they are worth visiting to spend time with the birds, the staff, and even other visitors and...
Read morei would give this place a five star review but it’s hard to do so. i have gotten a bird and they seemed very kind for the first few weeks of waiting to take my baby home. but slowly they began to show there true attitude. as i would sit to hold my bird i would watch countless people come in and happily hold and play with other birds. and my relative would do the same and when she did they were EXTREMELY harsh and told her to put it back. had the worker asked kindly i would have been ok but she was so incredibly rude i honestly don’t even want my family returning to this place. it had happened before when my relative had tried to ask to hold a bird they ignored her completely and gave her a disgusting attitude. extremely uncomfortable and horrid feeling environment. hoping they hadn’t been treating my bird along with the rest of the birds how they treat there few loyal customers who love coming in to spend time and interact with the beautiful birds. it’s a bird holding room, your supposed to be able to hold birds. if they need to be in there cage for feeding. KINDLY ask the person to replace them in to there cage, not be rude and snap at your customer. extremely unsatisfying and horrid experience. definitely don’t rate anything for...
