Extra Space Storage — Local services in Volo

So I reserved online because they had an awesome deal going. I was a little leary about not talking to someone directly. I want through about 4-5 surprisingly easy steps as to which deal I wanted. I selected the middle option which allowed me to pick my own unit. The bottom tier selection didn’t have that option but did allow you a slightly cheaper rate locked in for 4 months. The top tier granted unit selection and 24/7 access. I don’t need that but someone might. Once I chose, it guided me through checkout which included one time admin fee and a lock. The admin fee of 39 dollars was a little pricey but I guess the low starting price of the unit is a trade off. The lock was 19.99 and had no way to be removed out of the cart. However there is an option to return it to the office unopened for a refund. Also, you have to buy their insurance which is based on a value of your goods that you set. If you don’t want theirs you have to provide evidence of your own. It was about 10 bucks per month for 3000 dollars. At checkout I was charged and immediately given a lease agreement and access to the gate code. I was told my lock would be waiting for me inside my unit. Even though I did all this well before the office opened, I went over any way and my unit was already tagged and when opened my lock inside waiting. I decided to keep it because it was a good sturdy lock. It was confusing for a minute because the unit latch had a small zip tie securing it and my name wasn’t on the rental card attached. But I soon figured out all I had to do was remove those myself to access the unit. It was clean no visible signs of pests and as described. We stored our 5th wheel camper at this location and 2 years in a row the camper was damaged by another vehicle running into it, both times resulting in over $5,000 in damage. When trying to work with the manager, all he can tell me is that he can’t share anything he sees on the video footage and that we are on our own to repair it. Both times that the camper was damaged, it is obvious from the location of the damage that it was a plow truck hitting it. We have also arrived numerous times to find that the gate is not working and is left wide open for anyone to come and go as they please. As for the storage garages, my mom had a storage unit and when going in there, the amount of mouse droppings was way above what should be there. Basically, the floor was more than 30% covered. If you have something to store that you absolutely don’t care about, then this is the place for you, but if you want a safe, secure place to keep your belongings, then go somewhere else. Remember low cost isn’t everything if you can’t count on the managers to be able to help when needed. I have been using Volo Storage for about a year now. This place is top notch! The lady that is almost always working at the front desk (can't remember her name) is an absolute darling of a person. She is so friendly, nice, caring, and respectful, that I have been beyond surprised at her level of hospitality. Most people wake up and go to work, and may or may not be in a bad mood (which shows both ways). This wonderful lady seems to wake up under a rainbow with the sound of a babbling brook and wild horses running in the distance lol. An absolute gem of a person. Even though the storage unit is now 45 minutes out of my way from a Chicago suburb, there is no chance I would ever take my belongings somewhere else. They have my business for the entire time I live with an hour or two of the location :) Seriously, if you need a place to keep your things for any amount of time, do yourself a favor and go here.
