I don't write reviews... and I surely love whiskey enough that I've never written a review about a distillery before... and I would bet that the owner and staff are fantastic people, but I have to tell you that in my opinion, their bourbon tastes like it was made in a prison toilet. I'm not kidding. I read their 5-star reviews and they can't possibly be written by people who actually drink/understand bourbon and rye whiskey. This stuff even smells bad... I bought their blue labeled bourbon, poured ONE glass, dumped it out, and poured the rest of the bottle down the sink. Two months later, I decided to give them another chance with their "rock & rye" and somehow they managed to make it taste medicinal, like expired children's cough syrup. I would also bet that if you ask ANY bartender in St Louis who makes craft cocktails what they think of this stuff, they'll agree it's simply not of high quality. That being said, I genuinely want them to succeed. I want to support local businesses, ESPECIALLY a local bourbon distiller in STL... but right now, I just can't justify buying another bottle. I wasted about $60 giving them a shot. 1-star would be mean, so I'm giving them 2... but that's...
Read moreAttended a tour here in late 2023 to get a behind the scenes look at what I consider and up and coming whiskey distillery in St Louis. Our tour guide was Joe, a friendly guy with a bartending background, who was able to give me answers to my very nerdy whiskey questions. It's a brief tour with a VERY generous tasting at the finish. As someone who very much enjoys bold flavors I liked the 1yr bourbon and the 2yr rye, and though it's more of a liqueur, their Copperhead Rock and Rye Bottled Cocktail is incredible. Though quite different technically, it reminds me a lot (flavor-wise) or a Rusty Nail cocktail. A big thank you to Joe for putting up with my nerdy questions and for an enjoyable afternoon on a cold, wintery afternoon. Only the best to everyone at Switchgrass Spirits as they continue to grow and hone...
Read moreI was happy to see a local distillery existed and I liked the rye that I tried OK, but the Bourbon was really not even drinkable. It had a very awful smell and terrible after taste. I learned my lesson to never buy a boubon that is not labeled as "straight bourbon", but I have no idea why on earth a small distillery is making any other kind of bourbon but straight bourbon. Really poor. (I actually poured most of the bottle out - but I will happily delete this review if the company could send me a gift certificate to replace it with the straight bourbon or rye!)
Reply: Not $, I said free or discounted whiskey. But that’s ok, I’ll give you another chance sometime when I hear that you stop making the bourbon that I tried, and stick to...
