My experience with Canaan Meats had been great until three events (detailed below) that consequently robbed three stars from this review and left it with such a poor rating.
First, my wife brought in a cooler of venison for processing and was greeted with dreadful customer service. The grouchy older gentleman who helped her complained loudly about it being past hours for venison drop-off (despite the fact that these special venison-accepting hours aren't listed online, and she was there within their business hours), then proceeded to walk away without saying anything else and left her standing there awkwardly for 8 minutes until he eventually returned and begrudgingly accepted the drop-off.
The second event was that my complaint (sent in through the contact us form on their website) regarding the above event went unanswered. I assumed management would want to know of their customer service issue. Apparently, they didn't care (or their contact us form doesn't actually go through, I don't know which).
The final straw was that they undercooked a 50 lb batch of honey BBQ snack sticks from a deer that a close acquaintance of mine dropped off for processing. He isn't even going to try to get his money back. Over $200 down the drain.
It's really unfortunate how a business who I've happily purchased from before (retail and processing) has slipped down to such a poor rating in my experience. I love supporting small, local businesses in the Wooster area where I live, so this comes as a great disappointment to me. I am currently looking for a new local butcher...
Read moreWe generally like Canaan. However, I just attempted to drop a whole deer and they are not taking them. Deboning a deer properly takes skill and knowledge to not waste it, but we as normal people are expected to bring deer in deboned. Website said initially they would not take whole deer until gun season, then it changed to youth gun season. Lady I spoke to this morning was unnecessarily rude about the whole situation stating they posted it on Facebook (many do NOT have Facebook). Adding the increased price for processing deer, it was at one time convenient as it is just down the road. However I am happy to drive 40 minutes to Millersburg because they know customer service. I also learned that Millers Custom Meats only charges $54 for processing and skinning because the deer skins are sold for profit. So not only are we paying them to skin the deer but they are turning around selling the skins. Anyone in the Wayne County area would save themselves a lot of $$ for deer processing taking their business to Millers...
Read moreVery disappointed. We have had our pigs processed in Ashland Ohio for many years. We bought a GMO free pig from a new farmer that used Canaan. They messed up our order from the very beginning. We live several hours away and when we arrived they only had one of our pigs done out of two. We order extra hamburger from them and they did not have ready. We were suppose to have whole hams smoked. We got home and we had no whole hams what they did was sliced and salted everything. We do not eat ham that way and after spending all the money on the expensive pig we had no ham for Christmas or Easter. The Pig farmer sent us a small one when I called him. When we had our pig butchered else where they put pound weight on packages. Caanan doesn't bother doing any of that. This was totally bad experience compared to our old butcher. And on top of everything it cost more. Will not be...
