Listening to the Atlantic in Morocco’s White Imperial City, Rabat
Rabat is one of Morocco’s four imperial cities and also its capital. This coastal city is imbued with a gentle, romantic charm, thanks to the presence of the Atlantic Ocean. When people think of Morocco, some may recall Casablanca from the classic film Casablanca, others might envision the mythical, One Thousand and One Nights-inspired Fez, or perhaps the dreamy blue hues of Chefchaouen. Yet, Rabat surprised me just as much as these iconic cities. There’s a road that stretches along the curve of the Atlantic, and this was the path I took. So, when I arrived in Rabat, the first thing that caught my eye was the deep blue ocean, its waves rolling in like snowy crests, crashing against the shore in harmony with the city’s architecture. My first impression of Rabat was one of purity, serenity, and tranquility. Soon, a sense of inner peace followed—life here moves at a slow pace, making it impossible not to slow down, easing away any impatience. Rabat also boasts many must-visit attractions: ⭐ Kasbah of the Udayas – Perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic, this former military fortress now stands as a picturesque ruin. Though its walls and main structures are long gone, its blue-and-white streets offer a unique charm. ⭐ Mausoleum of Mohammed V – Located in the heart of Rabat, this mausoleum houses the tombs of the current king’s father and grandfather. The architecture radiates classic Moroccan grandeur. ⭐ Hassan Tower – Standing among more than 300 columns in the square of Mohammed V’s mausoleum, Hassan Tower was commissioned in 1196 by the Almohad ruler Yaqub al-Mansur. Severely damaged by an earthquake, it remains an awe-inspiring historical relic. ⭐ Royal Palace of Rabat – Visitors can explore the palace’s exterior, though guards will whistle if you get too close. Across from the palace stands a mosque reserved for the king’s prayers. Best of all? All these attractions are currently free to visit! #OffTheBeatenPath #Morocco #Rabat
