Alaska 7-Day Winter Road Trip Guide
π When: Early February π Transportation: Rental car (4WD SUV, no snow tires) π° Rental: Thrifty, ~$50/day insurance, no snow tires (+$20/day option) ποΈ Day 1: βοΈ Arrived in Anchorage at noon π¨ Stayed at Puffin Inn (airport hotel) π Rented car & visited Earthquake Park nearby ποΈ Day 2:π§ Drove to Matanuska Glacier (booked via text, $150/person) π‘ Stayed at Tolsona Lake Lodge (1.5hr drive from glacier) ποΈ Day 3: π· 5hr drive to Fairbanks β Dog sledding at Paws for Adventure ($90 + tip) π¨ Stayed at La Quinta Inn & Suites π Saw aurora at Chena Lake Recreation Area (β οΈ cold like knives! Dress warm!) (Skipped Cleary Summit but roads were actually fine) ποΈ Day 4: π Joined guided tour to Arctic Circle (no self-drive β winter not recommended!) ποΈ Day 5: πΏ Skied at Moose Mountain Ski Resort (check opening times online! Great for beginners!) ποΈ Day 6: ποΈ Drove to Denali National Park (snow too deep for hiking β kids had snow fights!) π Returned to Anchorage π¨ Stayed at Puffin Inn again ποΈ Day 7: π» Visited Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center ($27/person, drive or walk) βοΈ Drove back to airport β flew to Seattle π Tips: βοΈ February in Alaska is not too cold except in Arctic Circle and at night π Self-driving is manageable, but avoid Dalton Highway in winter β join a tour instead! π§€ Layer up for aurora viewing β it gets FREEZING! π Dog sledding and ski resorts are must-dos!
