Car-Free Newport, Rhode Island: A Perfect End to Summer 🌞

Since the school year started, I’d been stuck in New Haven and craving a trip to a nearby New England town before the weather turned cold. At first, I worried about not having a car—but I soon realized that with a group, public transport covers the Providence + Newport area in Rhode Island perfectly. I highly recommend coming here to feel the sea breeze; it was a rare comfort before recruiting season kicks off 🤣. Here’s the Timeline & Recommendations: 8:44 AM: Took Amtrak from New Haven, arrived in Providence around 10 AM. The ticket was only around $10+. 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM: Explored Brown University + walked around Providence. Taxis here are super cheap, so getting around was easy 🚕. 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM: Took the ferry from Providence to Newport. $12 per person, and highly recommended—the views along the way were absolutely stunning 🌊. 1:30 PM – 2:0 PM: Grabbed lunch near the Newport Ferry terminal. We were in a hurry, so we ate pizza at Mother Pizzeria. It was around $20 per person—nothing special, but it filled us up 🍕. 2:30 PM: Took a taxi to The Breakers (a must-visit mansion halfway along Cliff Walk)—only to find out tickets were sold out for Labor Day! Always buy tickets online in advance 🌚. 3:00 PM – 5:30 PM: Since we were already there, we made the most of it—walked south from the southern section of The Breakers all the way to the South End. Note: This stretch is rough, so wear sneakers 👟. 5:30 PM: Took a taxi back to Bowen's Wharf in Newport. It’s such a beautiful harbor town! We sipped beer while watching the sunset spread across the sea and slowly dip below the horizon—easily one of the most magical hours of my life 🍻🌅. 7:30 PM: Took a taxi to New London Station (you could also taxi back to Providence or Kingston for Amtrak). We chose New London because last-minute Amtrak tickets were too expensive; instead, we took the East Shore Line (fixed fare of $11) back to New Haven. 9:00 PM: Train departed New London, arrived back in New Haven around 10:00 PM. In short, this route is highly recommended for car-free students in the New Haven / Boston area! It’s best to split Uber costs with 4-5 people, buy round-trip train tickets in advance, and just enjoy the perfect end to summer! 🍺 #Yale #Newport #RhodeIsland #RhodeIslandTravel
