Sadly totally lacks any soul. I want to love it and I've been grappling with this feeling ever since visiting it.
Normally I'd want to support something like this in some way, but, it seems to lack any sort of purpose or soul. I can't say I have any desire or need to ever go back and that I find that disturbing.
It's a cool old building and has a lot of really cool architectural elements, old tech that led to how we all live today, great land and location (all of which frankly are better than the building), but, has the feel of a corporate museum and lacks any sort of home feel to it that many others in the world have maintained.
For instance there's no feel the rooms were actually lived in. Rooms are sparsely filled with random furniture, but absolutely nothing of the family and generations that lived here seems to remain. How does that happen? There is zero chance anyone actually lived there they way it's furnished and there is zero feel the propety was actually ever used as a home.
It's hard to not feel a sadness and sense of loss for some reason when walking it and while beautiful, it's cold/heartless and could just as easily been a Disney attraction or Smithsonian built for purpose building. The whole experience felt like a cash grab.
Idk what exactly it's missing but, my sense is if it was the family as the docents welcoming you in, instead of the security staff which seems to be all that's there it would have a MUCH better feel and create a sense of connection to that time period which the home utterly lacks.
For instance what makes the Whitehouse cool, aside from being the whitehouse is it's actually used, it's pretty obvious ppl live(d) there, it's actually used for something more than just ticket sales. If you want to see something generic, sadly this is it. The family should have done better for this poor old building and left it in...

The Breakers isn't one of the most popular mansions in Newport for nothing. This one can get crowded, so I would suggest going early if you can. You are allowed a self-guided tour, It's crazy to think how much money these people had on "summer cottages" back then. Every square inch of the house just screams "money, glam, etc". The view from the top balcony was my favorite, and the view from the back of the house looking up was great too.
Like the other houses that belong to the family, you cannot take pictures of the inside, however, people can get a sense of what to expect by the incredible outdoor landscaping and architecture. Backed onto the ocean, there is lots of green space to run around outside.
Truly the history behind this mansion is amazing, each room is so ornate and beautiful. The grounds are impeccable, we spent over 3 hours here and felt like we could have spent longer. The Vanderbilt's summer home is magnificent & worth every penny of the admission price. Although the tour guide will give a more in-depth experience,
The audio tour was absolutely worth every minute that I spent listening to it. Voice-overs, classical music, and extra informational sections gave me a real insider look to the mansion. I was able to spend as much time as I wanted to view things of importance and beauty.
The Vanderbilt’s who resided and still do? reside here knew how to live in style. The views from the back tiled patio are a sight in itself. Expansive lawns and greenery, rolling waves and crashing ocean, salty breezes rustle the plants stored out here. What a relaxing and enjoyable environment. The enormity of this place is astounding, you have to see it with your own eyes to truly understand...
