Chasing the aurora in Whitehorse

Travel โœˆ๏ธ ๐Ÿ˜„Direct flight from Vancouver to Whitehorse โœˆ๏ธ with Air North Air North is really great... It's like a "pampering airline" โ€“ they offer sandwiches ๐Ÿฅช, freshly baked cookies ๐Ÿช, and drinks. ๐Ÿฅ› The service is excellent, the seats are spacious, and there's a checked baggage allowance. ๐Ÿต I wish Air North would expand their routes to cover all of Canada!๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ ยท Checking aurora forecast ๐Ÿ” ๐Ÿ‘€I kept an eye on the aurora index in advance using the Aurora app. ๐Ÿคฒ When I booked the trip two weeks earlier, the index was 4.0, but it dropped to 2.0 right before departure, which made us really nervous ๐Ÿ˜“.๐Ÿ‘ฃ Accommodation ๐Ÿจ We stayed in an aurora-viewing cabin ๐Ÿ›– for two nights. The best part about the cabin is the convenience of watching๐Ÿ‘๏ธ the aurora anytime. The downside is that there's nothing around โ€“ it's totally in the wilderness. ๐Ÿ‘† The hot water comes from hot springs, so it has a sulfur smell ๐Ÿ˜‚. I showered on the day I arrived, but didn't shower at the cabin for the two nights ๐Ÿ™‚. ๐Ÿ’žOverall, though, it's clean and tidy! The cabin provides a simple breakfast, and we even got to eat pickled mustard greens๐ŸŒฑ and porridge, which was satisfying. ยท Itinerary ๐Ÿšถโ€โžก๏ธ We arrived around 6 PM. Our guide took us to a supermarket first. ๐Ÿ™‰ ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿ‘ˆThe biggest supermarket here is Superstore, but you can also bring supplies from home.๐Ÿคฅ Instant noodles are a must โ€“ theyโ€™re warm and comforting. ๐ŸŒ If youโ€™re staying in a cabin, remember to buy mineral water!๐Ÿ’ง Starting at 10 PM, the guide monitored the aurora conditions. When it appeared, they notified everyone and helped take photos ๐Ÿคณ โ€“ great news for those without a camera! We stayed out chasing the aurora until 2 AM.๐ŸŒค๏ธ Breakfast was at 10 AM, and the sky still wasnโ€™t fully bright.โ˜€๏ธโ˜€๏ธ My friend and I werenโ€™t interested in dog sledding, hot springs, or wildlife watching ๐Ÿ˜‚, so we just explored the downtown area in the afternoon. Itโ€™s small โ€“ you can walk around it in 2-3 hours. For dinner, we tried the local specialty: bison burger ๐Ÿ”. Wood bison has a stronger beefy flavor. We went back to chase the aurora at night. The aurora on the second day was much brighter and spread over a larger area than the first!๐Ÿ˜๏ธ We saw the aurora both nights, plus a shooting star ๐ŸŒ  and the Big Dipper ๐ŸŒŸ โ€“ it was totally worth it ๐Ÿ˜ญ. Our flight back to Vancouver was at 1 PM, so we slept in and left in the morning.๐ŸŒฅ๏ธ It was a perfect trip dedicated to chasing the aurora!๐ŸŒˆ #Yellowknife #Aurora #GreatNorthwest #YellowknifeTravelGuide #ChasingtheLights
